Each day, we will focus on a Kindergarten skill such as shapes/patterns, reading CVC words, science, or story elements. Every Day: Show and Tell: Students will each get a chance to share a toy, drawing, or other item with the group. Calendar: Class will identify the day of the week, month, and year. Note to families: I currently only have Flex Classes listed. In my writing classes, students will watch a video and follow along as they write. Then, they will submit their work to me, and I will make a personalized feedback video which can be followed by the student to make a final copy.
Although I am an English Learner teacher, I do have experience working with native English speaking students as well. I have taught summer enrichment classes for many years, and I assisted in implementing a STEM summer camp. I speak to all my students with natural speed and intonation. I also do not use a lot of TPR or "Total Physical Response". Although some ESL teachers speak slowly and use a lot of gestures, I like my students to learn in an authentic setting with interaction and language that they would encounter in the real world. When teaching young students 4-6 years old, I also have the same approach. I am upbeat, but not overly enthusiastic. I have experience teaching preschool and kindergarten, and I found that speaking to students with natural speech was effective in keeping their attention. I respect ALL teaching styles and believe that parents need to try different styles to figure out what works for their child(ren).
I have been teaching for over 20 years, and I have experience teaching all ages from infants to adults. I earned a BA degree in English as a second language and international education, and a Master's degree in English as a second language. Most of my electives in graduate school related to teaching emergent reading, and I have used those skills to help pre-literate students of all ages learn how to read. I believe that all children can learn, and that it is important to try multiple methods to help students to be successful.
