Join me and other Potterheads just like us as we try to manage the mischief of Harry Potter together!  In this course, our book club group will work through the fourth book in this popular series- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.  Harry Potter and his friends are back at Hogwarts again for their fourth year together!  Harry has been chosen by the Goblet of Fire to compete for Gryffindor in this dangerous contest.  Why did the Goblet of Fire choose Harry?  Can his team come out on top?  Join us as we find out if Harry Potter still has what it takes to manage all the mischief at Hogwarts!  

COURSE CONTENT:
In this course, we will discuss the novel Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.  

SPECIFIC TOPICS:
We will discuss the plot, characters, conflict, climax, protagonists, antagonists, resolution, vocabulary, and more!  We will discuss comprehension questions related to the text, and go over the answer to those questions together in class.

CLASS STRUCTURE: 
First- about a week before the class begins, I will send you the PDF file of the comprehension questions your child needs to get started!  I recommend a folder or notebook to keep the materials organized.  The initial PDF will cover the first three chapters.  The students will be asked to read these three chapters before our first live meeting together.  Every week we will have about the same amount of reading to cover- usually around three chapters.  I have divided the book into equal sections so that the students will have almost the same number of pages each week.  There are approximately 6-8 comprehension questions that the students will be able to answer each week as well.  When we meet together, we will talk through what we've read, any important vocabulary, the comprehension questions, profound quotes, and the characters we've met.  I will have a PowerPoint presentation to guide us through the parts of the story that we read through the week on our shared screen so that we can discuss any important "wow" moments from the chapters (and review the comprehension questions) together during our live classes as well!  We will also view and discuss some wonderful images created to go with the story.  I will send the comprehension questions for those three chapters as well. At the end of each live class, I will give information on the assigned reading for the next live class.  I will also send the PDF for the next three chapters of comprehension questions immediately following each live meeting, and you will have access to our Outschool class page where you can find our class materials, other resources I love related to this story, and an area to post feedback from some of the questions we discuss in our reading!  Students will have the opportunity to read each other's posts and respond through this discussion board as well! I think your child will love it as much as I do!  

TEACHING METHOD/STYLE AND STUDENT INTERACTION:
I prefer to keep my course sizes small so that everyone in class has the chance to participate if they wish!  Students are given the comprehension questions each week for that week's chapters.  They may complete the comprehension questions during the week as they read through those assigned chapters.  When we meet together for class, the PowerPoint that I have created will have those questions included on the slides.  The students will take turns answering the questions that they worked on during the week (which are on the PowerPoint on the screen.)  We will have a group discussion about some of the events that occurred in the text throughout only those assigned chapters (this is important to me so that there are no "spoilers" for the ending.)  Students are able to add input to the questions and I make sure that everyone is included and has plenty of time to participate in the group discussion.  My teaching style is very student-led, so this is a key aspect of my courses.  I am there to facilitate the discussion more than anything else.  The students lead it- and they love that!  

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE OR KNOWLEDGE NEEDED: 
There is no pre-required knowledge needed for students to participate!  I ask that the students read the assigned chapters for the week.  This almost always averages 3 chapters per week, which is around 60-70 pages in these books.  Then, I prefer for them to fill in the answers to the comprehension questions so that they are prepared for our class discussion when we meet live.
