A mysterious sickness is spreading across the land, and now you fear it has entered your village... In this one-time class, students will participate in a roleplay-style game. Students will be assigned different roles in a fictional medieval village, and must come up with town action plans (based on their assigned role) to defeat the plague. At the end of the class, the students will form a town council, and vote on the ideas they think will work the best. This allows students to see history...
Students will learn about the Black Death. We will discuss causes and solutions that were hypothesized during the Middle Ages, as well as the facts we now know.
I have an IDS BA in Modern Languages and Literature, Communication, and Digital Media. I have taken college courses in various historical periods, and studied the Black Death.
Students will be provided with two worksheets, which will be posted in the classroom the day before the class starts.

The Black Death is a very heavy topic. We will be discussing death, outdated views towards women (in the context of witches), medieval religious solutions to the plague (from a secular perspective), blood, animal cruelty (the killing of animals suspected to have the plague), and symptoms of the Black Death, which some students might find unpleasant or gross. If questions extend beyond the scope of the class, learners can follow up with guardians.
