In addition to a weekly guided discussion covering the chapters we’ve read, there will be activities corresponding to the themes and concepts being discussed. WEEK 1: Chapters 1-13 (read the assigned chapters before the class meeting) - Building Background Activity: After completing some ice breaker activities, learners will watch a short video about China and we will discuss the setting of the story. Then, we will learn about Chinese calligraphy and practice writing the characters for "mountain" and "moon". - Quiz Game - Group Discussion WEEK 2: Chapters 14-23 - Quiz Game - Group Discussion - Impossible Dreams Activity: In the story, Ma thinks that Ba’s stories make Minli dream of impossible things. Students will research an invention or achievement in history that was once thought to be impossible. We will discuss how this idea or invention changed the world and learners will have an opportunity to sketch out their own “impossible dream”. WEEK 3: Chapters 24-39 - Quiz Game - Group Discussion - Simile Hunt: Learners will be tasked with collecting vocabulary words while reading that reflect the vivid writing and figurative language used by the author. We will look for examples of similes and learners will have a chance to write their own. WEEK 4: Chapters 40-48 - Quiz Game - Group Discussion - Drawing Dragons: We will look at various depictions of dragons throughout artwork and literature. Learners will then draw their own dragon and identify how theirs is similar to and different from the ones they researched and the dragons in the story.

Hi there! My name is Cera (sounds like "Sarah"), and I am a highly experienced teacher with a passion for education and learning. I am a certified Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist and have completed coursework towards a Master's in Education with a focus on teaching multiple subjects to students in grades K-8.
I have been working in the field of education for the past ten years, and have a wealth of experience teaching reading and writing, as well as English as a second language. I have worked with students from elementary to middle school, both in the classroom and online, and have over five years of experience tutoring elementary and middle school students in English Language Arts.
In addition to my expertise in reading and writing, I am also interested in using storytelling and elements of game design to make learning more engaging and interactive. I love to create escape rooms and other types of mysteries, treasure hunts, and games that inspire learners to think critically and creatively.
In all of my classes, I aim to develop skills in communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking, and strive to create learning experiences that are both challenging and fun. Whether it's an escape room or a book club, I believe that learning should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience, and I look forward to sharing that experience with your learners!
In my free time I love to read, crochet, decorate cookies and look for tiny doors hidden in trees.
