I am a Native Californian who lived for several months on a native tribal reservation, learning from and living within the community. While not a native Nicoleño (the tribe of Karana, the heroine of 𝘐𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘭𝘶𝘦 𝘋𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘴), I have done extensive research into the novel and have taught this particular book from a viewpoint of respect and with an awareness of inappropriate prejudice, allowing students to question and discuss how native populations are viewed. Other than that, I am a book lover, home educator (8 students over 25 years ), author, literature grad student, and story-hungry Outschool teacher. One of my greatest joys is seeing your learners spark an interest in great literature through our discussions together!

I make it evident that the book is based upon a story, not the story itself. The author, Scott O’Dell, did the same. He wrote often about his love for California natives and crafted his books to tell their stories with respect.
Teaching materials for 𝘐𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘭𝘶𝘦 𝘋𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘴 are sourced from the nps.gov resources, which draws its materials from archeologists, botanists, ethnohistorians, tribal elders, native studies scholars, American Indian educators, and tribal-specific sites that present projects for us to emulate, such as Native American culture and indigenous artwork.
What happens when a learner is given the time and space to soak in a story and allow it to change their life? “Aha!” moments are my goal, and it’s why I adore leading worthwhile discussions about classic books. What good is it if we require a teen...
