There are no prerequisites to the first class. People read for a lot of reasons: because someone told them to, to discover something new, to sort out something technical. I think my favorite reason might just be to escape into an adventure. There is nothing so wonderful as following a character through twists and turns and out into a bright new future. These kinds of books have beautiful landscapes and ancient evils and valiant heroes. Lurking within our book list you will find dragons and hobbits, humans and dwarves, rabbits and shrews. There is something wonderful here for every age. See the end of the description for other books in this EPIC JOURNEY BOOK SERIES We will go over interesting words, phrases, and vocabulary that the learners will find in their reading in the coming week, and we will go over the characters that they will meet and there will be a list of discussion questions we'll pull from in our discussions for each week. Students will need the book "Dragon Rider" in some form. The class readings are based on the pagination in the Scholastic Turtleback School & Library Hard Cover (Linked Below) but I do prefer a paperback that they can take notes in. Any English version translated by Anthea Bell will do. Here are a few links to some options. My children and I discovered this as an audiobook at the library. We had been planning a long road trip and I thought this might be just the thing for that quiet hour that I needed for the baby (she was 3 at the time) to nap.
By the end of that first hour, we were all hooked. Since that time we have experienced this book no less than once a year, sometimes in audio format, sometimes reading to each other, and sometimes just tucking in for a bit of adventure. That baby turned 16 this month and this is still one of our very favorite books.
