In this course, students will participate in learning five new Greek and Latin roots, along with many of their English derivatives.  We will start with a basic lesson with definitions and a few English derivatives.  

Flashcards and interactive online Google Slides printable workbook pages will be provided for each lesson.  Common prefixes and suffixes will also be added to form new words from base words. As time allows, students will engage with sentence writing and sharing with the class, participating in daily review games such as board games, Kahoot! Quizlet, or paper Bingo.

Students will improve their reading comprehension by expanding their vocabulary with these roots and English root derivatives.  As they recognize the roots in unknown words they read, knowing the meaning of the root will help to determine the basic meaning, pronunciation, and spelling of the English word. 

Roots studied:  

Week of September 9: Roots populus, polis, urbs, curro, and verto plus English derivatives
Week of September 16: Roots plico, scribo, biblos, liber, and scio plus English derivatives
Week of September 23: Roots jacio, logos, verbum, cum, and pono plus English derivatives
Week of September 30: Roots digitus, manus, jungo, caput, and corpus plus English derivatives 
Week of October  7: Roots dens, bracchium, sauros, figo, andignis plus English derivatives
Week of October 14: Roots discipulus, amo, facio, magnus, and pathos plus English derivatives

As a home educator, I taught English to my own children.  I have a major in English and years of teaching high school English.  I returned to the classroom in 2015 to teach high school English at a charter school.  During that time,  I was motivated to request a change to reading instruction. My principal granted my request! And so,  for two years I enjoyed reading intervention in small groups of elementary and middle school students.  In 2019 I took the leap to becoming a full-time reading interventionist, teaching struggling readers using Zoom.
