每週 1 小時. For this class, students will be assigned "reflective analysis" assignments which will assess their understanding of the lesson. Each analysis will have 2-3 prompts and scholars will choose and complete 1 prompt prior to our next class. Students may write their response, record their response on flipgrid, or submit a picture of their creation on our Outschool Class page. The tasks should take about 10-30 minutes to complete each week.評估

In schools, students are taught that Christopher Columbus "founded" America, Rosa Parks was arrested because "she was tired and her feet hurt," and that President Abraham Lincoln abolished, or stopped, slavery. However, these claims and the countless others that are taught in millions of classrooms daily are rooted in a particular bias. American History has been told from the perspective of, for a lack of better terms, old white men who will refer to as the fathers of history. But the one consistent fact history also shows us is that it is always different, depending on who is telling the story. The objective of this course is to teach your student the untold and true stories of Black History from an educated, non-biased point of view. What will my child learn? Your child will learn about different historical events that have shaped Black History. This course is a discussion-based class that introduces events that students may be unaware of and give them a space to express their thoughts, questions, and feelings. How is your class structured? Our class is a 40-minute course that meets once every week for 8 weeks. The typical class breakdown is: - First 5-10 minutes: check in and review past lesson - Next 25-30 minutes: learn new content - Last 5 minutes: play a collaborative game and receive assignment for upcoming week/day. How do you teach? In this course, I utilize all learning styles to engage each child. We primarily use nearpod as an engagement tool, which makes learning this content fun! I also utilize videos and music for auditory learners, google slides for visual learners, and hands-on activities for kinesthetic learners. I incorporate informal and formal assessments in all my lessons to evaluate your child’s understanding of the content, including exit tickets and quick check-ins, to make informed decisions about the upcoming lesson. Every section that I have taught of this course has been different, as every scholar and every class dynamic is different. I am responsive to students' needs at all times. What does my child need to know before enrolling in this class? Your child needs to know their name and have an open mind! This class will challenge their thinking so open-mindedness is key! That’s it!

For this course, we will be viewing videos and images of several events in history that may be sensitive, including images from protests, lynchings, riots, etc. Topics are violent and touch on sensitive political questions, but will be covered and discussed in a safe, kid-friendly environment. We will use several vetted and approved tools, including Nearpod, YouTube, Quizizz, Blooket, and KaHoot. Scholars will not have to share their screen, but will need to access Nearpod and the gamified platforms (Quizziz, Blooket, and KaHoot) on their own device during class. It is best that they have a screen-splitting tool where they can view zoom on one side and the instructional platform on the other side.
