課堂經歷
We will learn vocabulary and practice identifying key vocabulary words using Quizlet, Quizizz and the lesson powerpoint. Vocabulary: Punnett square, homozygous, heterozygous, carrier, trait, genotype, phenotype, allele, dominant, recessive, probability, inherit, inheritance, percentage, ratio, genetics, Gregor Mendel, Incomplete dominance, co-dominance, and complete dominance. At the end of each lesson you will turn in your answers and discussions directly on Outschool classroom or private message. I will analyze your scores and check your work. Then I will provide personalized feedback to each learner. Course outline- Each section will be set up as followed: 1. Direct instruction using a Quizizz presentation. We will use a recorded video to present the material and instruct how to complete the hyperdoc assignment with practice problems for each section. 2. Hands on activities- Worksheet provided to practice working out Punnett squares/ interactive whiteboard on screen. You will be asked to solve particular questions with me in the classroom, and check your answers as we progress through the lesson. You will also be assigned questions to either complete on the hyperdoc or on a sheet of notebook paper. We will communicate via classroom to check your work each section. I can also provide individualized feedback to each student via classroom or email. 3. Review vocabulary and practice problems using Quizizz and Quizlet. By using Quizizz you will receive direct feedback instantly. I can see your score on the interactive Quizizz game and will provide individual feedback. You will also be able to see what you get right or wrong as you progress throughout the lesson. 4. Exit ticket for creating and solving Punnett squares, and recognizing vocabulary. You will engage in a google doc or Quizizz and I will provide you individualized feedback on what you did well on, and what needs improved/practiced. 5. Students will have an additional task to participate throughout the course. The prompts will be posted each week and discussions will take place in our Outschool Classroom page. They will have four engagement posts where students are encouraged to interact and communicate with each other. The prompts will provided each lesson optional extension engagement post 1- Trait survey, each student will survey if they have dominant traits or Recessive traits. They are encouraged to make a video. They can also complete the written version. After they post their results, students can compare results and/or predict what each others genotypes are. Additionally, students can use the vocabulary homozygous dominant, homozygous recessive, or heterozygous to describe traits. optional extension engagement post 2: Suppose a white-furred rabbit breeds with a black-furred rabbit and all of their offspring have a phenotype of gray fur. What does the gene for fur color in rabbits appear to be an example of? Solve this problem Use the traits discussed to create your own cross. Students can write out instructions or create a video summarizing how to solve a punnett square. Students will engage with each other by providing a question for each other to solve. Then the students will respond with their results. The final interactions will be encouraging responses to each other about how well they are doing. optional extension engagement post 3. Take a picture of a flower, determine if the color patterns follow a co- dominant or incomplete dominance pattern. Students can also determine if the color is dominant or Recessive. This game is like playing clue. The students take a picture of a local flowers and others Google or search to try to determine the trait. Students can make hypothetical traits (if they have a white flower they can say: xx is dominant, what is the genotype of this flower? What is the mode of inheritance?). optional extension engagement post 4: You are a Geneticist. Work to solve two different cases studies by responding and communicating via Outschool page on the case study post. Submit your final decision on the post. Students will determine the likely parents of a child, students will determine what is the ratio of potential gene combinations using s punnett square. Throughout the entire lesson, I will be providing individualized feedback on your practice questions, google doc/ pdf files, Quizizz score, and exit ticket results. I will communicate with you within 24 hours of your messages.
學習目標
Objective: Use Punnett squares to predict the genotype and phenotype of offspring in genetic crosses. We will study Mendelian Genetics, non-Mendel-incomplete dominance and co-dominance By the end of the lesson you will be able to solve various Punnett squares and general vocabulary

超過 4 週課 1:
Lesson 1: Introduction to Punnett Squares and Vocab
In lesson 1, you will learn the vocabulary punnett square, probability, genotype, phenotype, gene, ratio, segregation of genes, independent assortment, homozygous, heterozygous, carrier, dominant, and recessive. You will learn how to set up and solve monohybrid squares throughout the course, but in this lesson we will practice counting and determining the ratios of genotypes and phenotypes for already solved squares.
課 2:
Lesson 2: Complete dominance, Codominance, Incomplete Dominance Squares
In lesson 2, you will now be ready to set up and solve your own squares. You will segregation the parents genes on top and on the side of the square, then you will distribute the genes/alleles into the squares. Finally, you will analyze the results. We will solve complete dominant or Mendelian squares, incomplete dominant squares, and codominant squares. You will be able to differentiate the types by looking at the heterozygous phenotypes.
課 3:
Lesson 3: Sex linked Squares and Multiple Allele Squares
In lesson 3, you will now be solving more complex squares of sex linked punnett squares and multiple allele squares. Multiple allele squares that we will practice are blood types, fur color, and hair color. You will distribute the parent genes, analyze the square and calculate the genotype and phenotype possibilities for the offspring. Finally you will answer critical thinking questions based on the results of the squares.
課 4:
Lesson 4: Dihybrid Punnett Squares
In lesson 4, you will solve dihybrid squares. In other words, we will set up and solve two trait crosses. You will learn the foiling technique to properly distribute alleles for the parents genes so you can properly distribute the alleles to show all the possible combinations in the offspring. This helps us to visual what happens during sexual reproduction, the fusion of the gametes to produce offspring.

Hello! My name is Abbie Butler. Take a look around and feel free to message me with questions or requests.
Note: I'll be away on maternity leave from December 21, 2024- January 26, 2025. During this time I won't be holding any live lesson but flex lessons are still being offered.
Teaching Certifications and Specialties
I have a B.S. degree in Biology, and an AYA grades 7-12 teaching license in Life Sciences. I graduated from Muskingum University in 2013. I student taught in grades 7-8 and substitute taught for a year in grades pre k-12. I have taught High School Life Sciences (Biology/ Anatomy/ Zoology/ Oceanography/ Nutrition/ Botany/ Horticulture/ Environmental Science) and knit and crochet club for the past 10 years. I taught from 2013- spring 2019 in public and private schools. I am currently teaching full time online, since June 2019. This is my 4th year online teaching! So far I love it! I enjoy all areas of Life Sciences, as well as crocheting. Additionally, I have taught ESL online for a 2 years. I also tutored for exam prep - high school biology.
My lessons will focus on Anatomy, Biology, Zoology, Botany, Environmental Science, lab based lessons, as well as crochet classes for various ages ranging from 12-18. I also have private tutoring options.
Teaching Style
My teaching styles involve more of a hands on and student based practice/application process. There will be many areas of interaction and practice in the lessons. Most lessons are set up as a Quizizz lesson or powerpoint(large chunk of teaching the lesson), then do several practice questions (multiple choice, diagrams, matching), teach another small section, and then have another area of practice, finally review and summarize the lesson before saying goodbye.
Hobbies
I enjoy to go bike riding, fishing, going for walks and enjoying nature. I like to bake, or at least attempt to! My hobbies are crocheting and trying to make crafts with my cricut machine . I love spending time with my family.
Experience Crocheting
I have crocheted for 14 years. I am left handed. I will do my best to explain and model as many techniques as possible in class. I will also provide crochet YouTube videos to assist you! Crocheting is fun and can act as a stress relief, motivating and inspiring creative ideas.
Experience tutoring for OGT, OAA, NCSE, Science End of Course exams aligned with Ohio state standards and which are generally modeled from NGSS standards.
My Teaching Philosophy and Future Growth
My philosophy is you learn best when you are involved in your learning. My focus is for you to comprehend the content for mastery and long term use. It is easier to learn with practice and activities rather than lecture the entire lesson. Therefore, class will have various dynamics and interactions.
We will have a lot of fun in class. You will leave my classroom confident with your new content knowledge. I will also ensure you have enough practice resources and variation to continue learning outside of class. Items will be shared via hyperdocs made with google docs the day of class.
Cancellations
If a class does not have the minimum learners then, I will contact enrolled students and discuss how they would like to proceed. Options: run the class with the low enrollment or transfer to a different section a week or two later.
If no students arrive when class starts, I will wait 5-10 minutes and then begin making a recording students can view anytime afterwards.
Refunds and Transfers
Most classes operate under the 'Limited' refund model. Learners can withdraw with a refund up to a week before class starts, or within 24 hours of purchase. Refunds will not be sent for withdrawals outside this window, but transfers may be requested up to 24 hours before class.
No-shows will not receive a refund, but may be offered video recordings.
Class Recordings
I typically post the recording if the parents ask, in general, I try to weekly if I remember to post it automatically with no request. Families can access this recording in the same classroom from which they launched the live course.
Flex Classes
I do currently offer a few selected flex classes, but I am currently working on revamping the classes so most of my flex classes are not available at this time. I post recordings of every class I teach, which can be used with class materials to complete the course on the learner's schedule. Activities in flex classes are interactive and engaging still. I actually model my flex classes off of a few of my popular live classes.
Check out my class descriptions for specials and coupons!
Thank you! I hope to see you soon!
Sincerely,
Abbie
