I am glad that you are here to read about my upcoming class. I am passionate about Biology and it shows in my enthusiasm during class time. I want to impart my enthusiasm with each and every learner. Biology is about anatomy. Biology about physiology. Biology is about microbiology. Biology is about nutrition. Biology is about public health. But most importantly, Biology is about life. I am also curious to find out what aspect of Biology is of most interest to the student. Do you think your student will enjoy learning about genetics, the anatomy of the spine, cell biology, smallpox, polio, tuberculosis, histology, the coronavirus, bacteria, or nutrition and health the most? All those topics and more are covered within this 24 session class. My degree is in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Xavier University. I have a Masters in Public Health with a concentration in Nutrition from Tulane University. I have In the last 1990s, I completed three semesters of medical school classes along with the medical school students at Case Western Reserve University. I was hired by an exam corporation to write practice test questions for the MCAT(Medical College Admissions Test). As a teacher, I do incorporate the usage of Latin roots during or course of study of Biology. I do take time to engage with each student to learn the student’s individual personality. In my opinion, information is better retained in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. So, I strive to have a lively class. This class is the camp form of my class " Biology for Middle School." Here are my reviews from this class: This class was amazing, if i could give this class a 6 then I gladly would. The curriculum is outstanding and the ways Ms. Brandy teaches them is flawless. Ms. Brandy encourages people to engage in the learning and always coming up with ways to make the learning fun. My daughter has taken countless Outschool classes and she has emphatically claimed this was among her very favorite. When asked, science is now her favorite subject. She honestly does love every class she takes, and has always particularly loved her science classes. However, she was very sad this class was ending, really enjoyed Mrs. Brandy and wished it kept continuing so she could continue to learn from her. We are very grateful we found this class. She would highly recommend! My daughter really enjoyed this class. Mrs Brandy managed to create a classroom that was empowering, inclusive and where a love of learning was embraced. Inspirational and passionate teacher that is equally inspired by her learners. The class was great! My daughter wasn't that into biology before. (She had actually taken a different science course but it ended up being very lecture-like and couldn't really grab her interest.) She loved learning with Mrs.Brandy and learned a lot about cells, vitamins, famous scientists, genetics and more. She has also started to eat a lot more vegetables after hearing from Mrs. Brandy that vegetables should cover more then a quarter of your plate! It was great to hear her come down to dinner babbling excitedly about whatever they had just learned in class AND ask for more vegetables. My daughter is now taking Mrs. Brandy's Honors Biology class and Chemistry class and those seem to also be just as interesting to her. Mrs. Brandy is an absolute treasure. My son has had some great teachers on Outschool, but Mrs. Brandy really takes the cake. I love her approach—- she doesn’t treat the students in her class as if they’re unable to understand difficult things because they’re children— she believes in their ability to learn complex ideas and subjects and it’s obvious in her lessons. She tells them that they can learn difficult things, and that there’s no reason they should have to wait until they’re older—- which I loved. The lessons were thoughtful, they weren’t watered down, and she didn’t shy away from the complexity of what was being discussed. My son is so excited to take her chemistry 1 & 2, and he’s really looking forward to her Honors Biology course. Our only complaint is that Mrs. Brandy doesn’t teach more classes ;) If you’re looking to put your child in a class where real biology is being taught by a teacher who is funny, patient, and has thoughtful lessons, look no further. Mrs. Brandy’s class is money well spent! One of my best days as a teacher, was this review that I received about my Histology class (included in this class): “You know it's a good class when your kid comes out of it feeling like an area that they previously thought was too technical and tricky would actually be a possible career choice! Excellent teaching here in the truest sense of the word.” On Day 1, the Cell Theory will be discussed via PowerPoint, class discussion and a short video. We will learn about the life and discoveries of Louis Pasteur. On Day 2, we learn about Prokaryotic cells via modeling, discussion, and a PowerPoint presentation. On Day 3, Eukaryotic cells and organelles via modeling, discussion, and a PowerPoint presentation. There will also be a PowerPoint presentation on Fungi. On Day 4,, there will further instruction about Fungi. There will also be a PowerPoint presentation on the Scientific Process including independent and dependent variables. We will discuss our Fungi experiment, penicillin, and Alexander Fleming. On Day 5,, we will learn all about Bacteria through an interactive PowerPoint presentation. In Day 6 class, the presentation will be "How do two Brown-eyed Parents have a Blue-Eyed Baby?" On Day 7, we will study about Fungi via PowerPoint. On Day 8, Dr. Benjamin Carson and Florence Nightingale. On Day 9, we will examine the ABO and Rh blood typing system via PowerPoint. In the interactive class on Day 10, there will prediction of varying blood types depending on student's own blood types (if known) or chosen blood types. Deductive and analytical reasoning skills will be used to determine parental blood types in family pedigree presented on the board by the instructor. On Day 11, we will discuss Coronavirus updates and current development of vaccine development. On Day12, we will study bacteria and the results of bacterial illnesses. On Day 13, DNA structure and Function. I will also introduce the end of semester Nutrition project. We will discuss the genetic disorders of Sickle Cell Disease, Cystic Fibrosis, Marfan Syndrome and their hereditary characteristics and typical symptoms. On Day 14, we will learn how to read food labels as a group. On Day15, there will be a PowerPoint presentation on Nutrition including Water Soluble and Fat Soluble vitamins. On Day 16, there will be an instructor led Vitamin C Experiment, a presentation and group discussion on how to read food labels. In addition, the diseases associated with a lack of nutrition will be presented in PowerPoint. On Day 17, we will discuss macronutrients an the roles of oils, protein, carbohydrates, and fats in our diet. GMOs, organic food, and gluten-free products will be added to the discussion and PowerPoint presentation. On Day 18 class, case studies will be presented based on the information of vitamins and nutrients that we have learned together in class. Students should be able to deduce what vitamin or nutrient deficiency the patient is experiencing based on symptoms. We will study great scientists, and students will learn about the lives and scientific discoveries of -Gregor Mendel, George Washington Carver and Clara Barton in a PowerPoint presentation. Also, there will be discussions about how these scientific accomplishments affect our lives today. On Day19, Gregor Mendel and George Washington Carver will be covered On Day 20, predictions will be made by the students of the probability genotypic and phenotypic outcomes based on the utilization of a special project. The probable outcomes of the genotypes of phenotypic characteristics will be given live by students to predict as a probable outcomes. On Day 21, we will learn the anatomy and features of cardiac tissue, bone tissue, red blood cells, white blood cells, and fat cells by viewing Microanatomy slides. There will be a short visual quiz to review the material at the end of class. On Day 22, we will learn about Smallpox, Polio, and Tuberculosis, and the novel Coronaviurs via a PowerPoint lecture and discussion. On Day 23, we will examine the anatomy of the spine via PowerPoint plus a special group project. On Day 24, Final Project Presentations on Nutrition will be due and discussed. All above subject matter will be covered however the schedule may change slightly due to classroom dynamics.

I’m a native of New Orleans. I am also a joyful homeschool mother of one and a passionate teacher of Biology, Chemistry, and Nutrition. I not only delight in teaching these subjects well but also enjoy creating a fun and stimulating environment in which to learn. Although I teach the hard sciences, I focus on making those academic classes amusing with engaging activities and by adding my sense of humor to the mix.
I enjoy debate, reading, writing well, cooking, and swimming in my spare time. I was a local Scripps-Howard spelling bee champion. I have also won numerous writing awards. I am proud to be on the board of the Catholic Homeschoolers for the Archdiocese of Galveston/Houston.
I have a degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Xavier University of Louisiana. I have a Master’s degree in Public Health from Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine with a concentration in Nutrition. I have work experience in laboratory research, medical sales, and medical/editing writing. I completed coursework in Gross Anatomy, Histology, Biochemistry, Statistics, Cardiology, Pulmonology, and Pharmacology at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in Cleveland, OH. I was formerly employed by Johnson & Johnson and GlaxoSmithkline. I tutor high school biology and I have experience with AP Biology and the Biology CLEP (College Level Examination Program) exam. I like catering to each child’s interests and responding to each question. I am also an ACE Educator.
I do have a loyal following of students and I would like to share the Outschool reviews that has been written about my classes.
Here are a few:
1)This was my daughter's third class with Mrs. Brandy and it certainly won't be her last. She learned a lot about chemistry, including high school terms, in an easy to understand way and had fun while doing so. She enjoyed the camaraderie with the other students, the hands on experiments and the Kahoot. Mrs. Brandy is knowledgeable about her subjects and shares her information in a fun and engaging manner. We highly recommend Mrs. Brandy's classes.-Chemisty for Middle School
2)Mrs. Brandy is fantastic. My daughter was excited to join the classes each week, and was excited to tell me things she learned in class. I will have her take other Mrs. Brandy classes. I am a university professor, and was able to overhear some of the classes, and was really impressed - Mrs. Brandy is a real, professional teacher - a lot of respect for her teaching method and curriculum. I admired her creativity of using candy to illustrate the spine. Thank you Mrs. Brandy! - Biology for Middle School
3)You know it's a good class when your kid comes out of it feeling like an area that they previously thought was too technical and tricky would actually be a possible career choice! Excellent teaching here in the truest sense of the word. -Histology/Microanatomy
