Welcome to the first section of our course! Here, we will focus on letter sounds, also known as phonics. Understanding the sounds that each letter makes is fundamental for reading and writing. Vowels (A, E, I, O, U) can have short sounds and long sounds. Let's practice with a few examples: 
Short A: /æ/ as in "apple" 
Long A:/eɪ/ as in "cake" 

Consonants typically have one common sound, though there are exceptions. Here are some examples: 
B: /b/ as in "ball" 
D: /d/ as in "dog" 

 CVC words are three-letter words that follow a consonant-vowel-consonant structure. They are simple to read and often used in early learning to build confidence.

Practice Activity:
1. Read the word "cat".
2. Sound out each letter: /k/ /æ/ /t/.
3. Blend the sounds together to say 

 Sight words are words that learners need to recognize instantly without sounding them out. These are often common words that appear frequently in text.

 Understanding concepts of print involves knowing how books work, such as recognizing the front and back cover, understanding that text runs from left to right, and knowing where to start reading.

Where to Start Reading
Show learners where to begin reading on a page, usually at the top left corner. Demonstrate how to follow the text with their finger as they read.
