Just in case the soul cakes aren't completely baked by the end of the class, you may need to finish them off after the class has finished. Oh yes, make sure you are ready to share the soul cakes with your family and friends.評估
I would love to see some pictures of the finished soul cakes. Please send me some photos!我們無法翻譯此文,請刷新頁面並再試一次。
課堂經歷
I'm looking forward to sharing this recipe with you! Soul cakes are delicious fruity, spicy biscuits that were traditionally given to 'soulers' at Hallowe'en. Although they are called cakes, they are actually a cross between a cake and a British biscuit. We will start by putting our aprons on and briefly introducing ourselves and then finding out what the students already know about the traditions of Hallowe'en. We will look at a map and find the British Isles, and talk a few of the many traditions surrounding Hallowe'en celebrations in the UK. For example, soul cakes were given to 'soulers', who were usually children and the poor, who went from house to house singing and offering to pray for the dead (this was called 'souling') in return for soul cakes. We will then make the dough for the soul cakes, roll it out, and use a cutter to shape them. We will mark the traditional cross on the top and pop them in the oven. While the soul cakes are cooking in the oven (and smelling tempting!) there will be time for a quiz about some of the stranger ways Hallowe'en has been celebrated in the British Isles. For example, do you know what a punkie is, or how to use nuts to tell who your future husband or wife will be? As this is a baking class, it is essential an adult is on hand to assist where necessary as we will be using a hot oven. If your child falls outside the age range for this class, do get in touch; it may still be possible for them to bake with us. Please note, we are using wheat flour and eggs, so this class will not be suitable for children who are allergic to these ingredients. As a child I used to love Hallowe'en. We would carve lanterns out of turnips (that was hard work!) and make costumes, and then go trick or treating around our local streets. Sometimes me and my friends would have a Hallowe'en party, with apple bobbing and soul cakes, and we would tell each other spooky stories in the dark! Look out for other sessions in the 'Bake the British Isles' series! I am also running the soul cake class as part of my Bake the British Isles Cooking Club, an ongoing class that includes all the bakes I have taught on Outschool https://outschool.com/classes/bake-the-british-isles-cooking-club-6l3gAsJy?sectionUid=63dc645d-530f-4c16-acbb-00068a555bdb&showDetails=true Please note, we are using wheat flour and eggs, so this class will not be suitable for children who are allergic to these ingredients.

Hello everyone!
My name is Helena, and I live in the UK. It is my pleasure to share with my learners some of the best/worst/quirky bits of Britain through my own nerdiness for history and baking. Enthusiasm, positivity, patience, joy, respect are key to my classes, and I have found my learners have bucketfuls of these attitudes too. Many of my learners take every single class I offer…take a look at my reviews.
I have been a teacher for over 25 years (crumbs!), and I still work in the classroom. I also work for myself teaching groups and one-to-one, online and in person. My learners are aged 3-16. Each learner is different; I love it when they want to join in, ask questions, discuss conundrums, share knowledge but listeners and thinkers are most welcome too (and some of us just need more time to feel confident before contributing). I make sure my classes are joyous but orderly – it’s down to respect again. I aim for inclusivity – it’s helpful if you let me know if your learner has an additional need so I can adapt things for them.
I have a BA Hons in English Literature (2.1) from Southampton University, a PGCE (teaching qualification) from Leicester University and an MA in Creative Writing (distinction) from Birmingham City University. I also have a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) qualification too (I teach English to refugees as a volunteer).
My Outschool offerings are firmly based in Britain. We bake classic British recipes in my cooking classes. I bake at the same time, and we do each step together. (I can’t resist and I add in a bit of history of the bake and a silly food quiz too). The results go down a treat! My British history classes cover UK Myths, Legends, Folklore and Customs; Castles, Knights and Medieval Life; and Tell Me More! A History of the British Isles, which is a delightful romp through key moments in British history from the Stone Age up to 1800 (plenty of serious bits in there too, though...).
I also offer on request one-to-one or group classes on English, maths and EAL. I have lots of experience teaching Early Years, phonics, reading, writing and maths; I know that some families particularly want a UK teacher for this, and I am more than happy to oblige.
Come and join us!
