課堂經歷

Are you a passionate artist looking for a new theme for your next artistic creation? If so, you've come to the right place. In this class we will learn about Deaf art and the history behind ASL that impacted how deaf artists express themselves through various modes of art today. We will learn about ABC stories and how they are used for creative storytelling and poetry for kids in the deaf community to build literacy skills. Not all signed stories are ABC stories, and we'll take a look at some other examples of ASL stories and focus on the expressive side of storytelling. We'll also take a look at some drawings and paintings by deaf artists and talk about how their experiences as a deaf individual might have influenced their creations.

During the first session, we will go over the history of ASL, the surrounding culture, and the various modes of artistic expression seen within their community. Students will be encouraged to create their own artistic piece using their own talents and skills over the week in connection to what they learned in class and will share their final projects with everyone during our second and last class meeting. Students may submit their projects to me through the general Outschool classroom or send them directly to me through the Outschool conversation feature. Time permitting, we'll play a game to review some of the topics we learned the week before.

During the second class, students we will look at students projects and have conversation concerning their ASL culture influence on their work. Time permitting, we will also play several rounds of Kahoot with questions about the knowledge they learned in the previous class session.

其他詳情

父母的引導和規範
We will go over the Deaf President Now (DPN) movement in which deaf protestors at Gallaudet University protested the election of a hearing president at their deaf university. Some of the ASL story videos we will watch contain themes connected with death, car accidents, and heart issues. Please view the YouTube links included in the Sources section. I will be discussing deaf history and the oppression faced by the deaf community at the hands of unsympathetic hearing individuals. This includes speech training, deaf flights conducted by Charles Lindbergh, and religious practices believed to cure deafness. I will also be touching on the Deaf President Now movement and the concept of eugenics. Since there are different views on values and practices within the deaf community, I will be presenting deafness from various angles. I will provide examples of common misconceptions held by hearing individuals according to members of the deaf community, but will also indicate that not everyone within their community thinks the same way. I will be discussing the differences between American Sign Language and Black American Sign Language (BASL), and the historical context that plays a significant role in these differences. I will briefly mention racial differences between Black and White roles as deaf individuals and sign. Additionally, there are many other cultures within the deaf community, and ASL is not the only accepted mode of communication. I will briefly touch on Hand Talk, an Indigenous Sign Language, to show the differing views on American Sign Language's origins. I will share personal examples of my experiences communicating with members of the deaf community who were both welcoming to learners and forgiving of mistakes, as well as those who were less patient. Students are encouraged to relate the information to their prior knowledge, but I will enforce propriety within the classroom. If there are any sensitive or potentially emotional questions, I will encourage students to ask their parents/guardians and redirect the conversation. I will issue a kind but firm warning to any students who persist in discussing topics that may be uncomfortable for others, and failure to comply will result in their removal from the class.

I have a communicative level of American Sign Language after having been introduced to the language at age two. I took a community college ASL class where I continued to grow in my signing ability and also studied ASL on my on for many years through Dr. Bill Vicar's online university, Lifeprint.com. I am continually involved and interact with people in the deaf community through in-person and online ASL meetups and events and love sharing this amazing visual language and its surrounding history and culture with others.
