Greetings, aspiring book artists!
Do you like to write and/or draw? Do you want to have a place to fill with your thoughts, stories, pictures, photos, mementos?
Why not make your own?
Join me to learn!

In this bookbinding class I'll teach you to make two different simple books based on the pamphlet stitch technique (using blunt tapestry needles). You'll leave the class with at least two different books - and the ability to make your own ever after!

I'm a lifelong bookmaker and award-winning book artist who's been teaching kids how to make books for more than 20 years. I pride myself on clear step-by-step instruction, with a document camera on my hands, and check for comprehension every step of the way. It's my goal to have learners leave my classes able to recreate these books easily after class without someone instructing them.

For the most part, we'll be using supplies that you can find at the craft store. For the first day I will ask you to pre-prep a page by cutting it down (but, you don't HAVE to do that, if you are pressed for time - you can create the book without having a wraparound cover) - the rest of the time we're using paper you can just buy and use as is.

WHAT WILL I LEARN IN THIS CLASS?
Here's the breakdown! (Please note that each day will include a chunk of time to decorate the books after we make them!)
-Day 1: pamphlet stitch introduction. You'll create a pamphlet stitch book with a wraparound cover (if you don't want to/can't prep a cover piece, you'll just create a pamphlet stitch book with a regular cover)
-Day 2: pamphlet stich, continued. You'll create a pamphlet stitch book with a pocketed cover and a beaded binding. If time permits, we'll create a separate pocketed folder.

SUPPLIES: you definitely need supplies! Please see the suply list section below for details.

CLASS POLICIES OF NOTE:
a) Students may share a camera, but all students must be individually registered for the class.
b) Outschool requires we verify learners with camera on, but beyond that, I've found that if I can't see what students are doing, I can't be of maximum service to them. It's important that I be able to see all learners' work. If learners don't wish to stay on camera during the verification, then they must at least keep the camera pointed towards their hands so I can see them working - or be willing to turn cameras on periodically so I can see what they are doing. Please do not register for this class if this is not acceptable to you.

其他詳情

父母的引導和規範
Please note, students will be using sharp things in this class: scissors, pushpins and needles. Although I review safe usage, if you have any concerns about your student's ability to use these materials safely, please make sure you are nearby to offer assistance.
供應清單
Students will need all of the following supplies (this is the quick version. If you register, you will get the extra-detailed version in the classroom, explaining exactly how much of everything you need):
-PENCIL
-PAPER:
-9x12 construction paper (ideally, Tru-Ray - it is far superior to other construction papers)
-12x18 construction paper (ideally, Tru-Ray - it is far superior to other construction papers) - you will have to measure and cut one piece down (if you want a wraparound cover). The others will stay full size. IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO/CANNOT CUT DOWN A LARGER PIECE - you can use a 9x12 piece for the cover, BUT I'd like to use 12x18 paper to make a folder on day 2.
  -copy/printer paper
-scrap paper to protect your table when gluing
-SCISSORS
-FOLDING TOOL (so many options! eg a bone folder, "folding tool," popsicle/craft stick, ruler, non-serrated butter knife)
-A GLUE STICK - I recommend this for all decorating on day 1! White glue is tricky to use on a book without it wrinkling the paper terribly.
-A DISHTOWEL
-SOMETHING TO MAKE HOLES WITH: like an extra-large push pin
-SEWING SUPPLIES:
-a needle, slightly on the thicker side - I HIGHLY recommend a blunt needle, like a TAPESTRY NEEDLE (#18 is a perfect size) - tapestry needles are ideal for this because they are thicker and blunt and there's less risk of poking fingers, plus it is easy to get craft thread into them. I don't recommend using a sharp sewing needle at all but if you do send your student with one of those, please ALSO send a thimble.
-craft thread or similar (NOT embroidery floss, it separates)
-IF YOU HAVE SMALL BINDER CLIPS IN YOUR HOUSE - 2 small ones (don't go buy them if you don't have them)
-A BRAD (can be plain or decorative) - unless you are skipping the wraparound cover
-MARKERS/COLORED PENCILS for decoration
-SMALL BEADS (technically these are optional, but nice to have for the beaded binding on the last day)
-OPTIONAL - more decorative paper scraps
-OPTIONAL - Stickers or other embellishments
-OPTIONAL - washi tape

I've been making books since I was a child, and teaching kids to make books for more than 20 years. I am a practicing book artist, and was the featured artist at NYC's Center For Book Arts in 1995. I pride myself on offering clear instruction and tricks to help kids not just make these books with me online, but make them on their own later on!
