Archaeology is a multi-disciplinary study of the human past. It is one of four sub-fields of anthropology and uses anthropological theory to generate research questions on archaeological data. Students will learn about the development of archaeology from its earliest history to the modern methods and technology used today. Students will be introduced to methods used in site identification and recording and how archaeologists collect data through excavation. Students will learn about spatial and temporal controls and how archaeologists use them to identify archaeological cultures and understand cultural process and change. Students will learn about dating methods and how they are used to understand sites that have been occupied by different cultures. Students will also learn about behavioral processes and how they can be used to interpret the archaeological record.
I am a professional archaeologist for over 20 years that has worked at sites throughout the United States and the world. I am currently the tribal archaeologist for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. I also teach archaeology/anthropology classes at Sitting Bull College and am a historic interpretive guide at On-A-Slant Mandan Indian Village at Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park in Mandan, North Dakota. I have been engaged in teaching youth about the science of archaeology since AD 2000.
