課堂經歷
Are you interested in learning Modern Standard Arabic? Thinking about studying Arabic in college & want to get some practice in advance? In this flexible-schedule class, students will have access to new lesson videos twice a week explaining and demonstrating how to read, write and converse in Arabic. Every lesson will provide 2-3 videos teaching a set of the Arabic alphabet, introducing vocabulary and teaching conversational material. By the end of the 4-week course, you will be able to use the alphabet to read the phrases and expressions we have learned. Weekly assignments will include a combination of written and video assignments, as well as Quizlet sets of letters and vocabulary for further practice. Audio or video recordings made by the student will allow me to check for correct pronunciation. This class aims to be interactive and will provide weekly opportunities to interact with the other students and with me. These interactions may take place in a number of ways, including weekly learner-to-learner interaction. One such required weekly interaction is an assignment to upload a video or audio file with a question in Arabic that is directed at another student in class. The student called upon will then answer the question and respond with their own question. These questions relate directly to the content learned in class that week and may include: Week 1: "What is your name?" Week 2: "How are you, Samira?" Week 3: "Where are you from, Jonah?" Week 4: "What is this?" or "How do you say ____ in Arabic, Leila?" Student Arabic Writing Challenge Each week students will be placed in pairs. Each student will practice new vocabulary by writing 5 new words from the lesson that week and intentionally connecting one letter of one word incorrectly. The second student will attempt to identify the (intentional) error, and will then write five words with one incorrectly connected letter of their own. Office Hours Students are invited to meet me for an optional 30-minute live session to address any remaining questions, practice any skills that proved difficult, and engage in Arabic conversation with each other or with me, based on what we have learned over the last month. Since this is a flexible course, we will not have live meetings, but I will be available to answer questions and correct assignments through the classroom messaging system. The content of this flexible course is the same as the live version of Arabic for Beginners 1. Week 1: Lesson 1: - Introduction to the Arabic Language & Alphabet - Arabic Letters - Set 1 Lesson 2: - Conversation: Greetings & Introductions - Arabic Letters - Set 2 Week 2: Lesson 3 - Vocabulary (What is this?) - Arabic Letters - Set 3 - Conversation: What's your name? Lesson 4 - Long and short vowels in Arabic - Vocabulary: Number 0 - 10 Week 3: Lesson 5 - Arabic Letters - Set 4 - Vocabulary: Colors Lesson 6 - Arabic Letters - Set 5 - Vocabulary: Common Adjectives Week 4: Lesson 7 - Arabic Letters - Set 6 - Reading Tutorial Lesson 8 - Review the exercises of the final assignment, which will include a review of class content

碩士 在 英語 從 San Francisco State University, MA in Linguistics
My entire career has focused on teaching languages and encouraging cross-cultural interaction and learning. After obtaining my undergraduate degree in English, I joined an acclaimed cultural center in Morocco, where I was trained to teach Arabic and facilitate multicultural dialogue. I taught Modern Standard Arabic and Darija (Moroccan Arabic) to students from all over the world.
After moving to California, I continued working as a teacher of languages. I taught Arabic, French, and English as a foreign language for various institutions, including Berlitz, ABC Languages, and Fresno State University. In 2013, I received my Masters in English (with a focus on linguistics) from San Francisco State University. I have been teaching Arabic on Outschool for more than 5 years.
When learning a new language, it's best to use that language as much as possible. While speaking some English may be necessary at first, it should be minimized as learning progresses. As much as possible, I choose to engage my students in Arabic and elicit responses in Arabic as well.
The most efficient way to learn a language is to focus on conversation. In my classes, I always prioritize speaking to help the learner overcome any initial feeling of intimidation. Everybody has a different learning style. As a teacher, I adapt my teaching style to the needs and learning styles of each individual student.
When I'm not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two young sons. I'm excited to raise my children in a multilingual and multicultural environment. With that goal in mind, our family spent 2019 traveling and homeschooling - we visited Germany, Austria, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, and Albania. It was fascinating!
Over the last four years, I've had the pleasure of teaching students of many backgrounds from over two dozen countries. I teach all levels, from absolute beginners to advanced student of Modern Standard Arabic. Feel free to contact me - I'm excited to help you find the perfect course for your learner!
