Anne Frank is famous for the diary she wrote while hiding for 2 years in what she called The Secret Annex. What was Anne Frank's hiding place look like? Why did she, her family, and others have to go into hiding? What was daily life like in hiding? Why did Anne write a diary? We will explore these questions and more during this one-time class about the Anne Frank House Museum. To start the class, we will discuss any background knowledge students have about Anne Frank. From there, students will learn some background information about World War II and why many Jewish people went into hiding. We will look at a timeline of Anne Frank's life and her diary. Next, we will take a virtual tour of the Secret Annex, which is freely available on the Anne Frank House Museum's website. We will look at and discuss each room of the Secret Annex. At the end of class, students will be asked to share what stood out to them the most from this experience. Lastly, we will have a Q&A session where students can ask me questions related to what we covered in class. This class will be taught with Canva presentation slides, images, short video clips, and content from AnneFrank.org, including the Secret Annex virtual tour. No prior knowledge about Anne Frank, the Holocaust, or World War II is necessary to take this class.

We won't read Anne Frank's diary in class, but it is a book I will recommend to students for further reading and it will be mentioned a lot during class. Common Sense Media recommends this book for students ages 11 and up. Please review this book before allowing your children to read it. I am a licensed teacher for grades K-12. I have taught about Anne Frank in a public school setting and I have attending professional development trainings from the North Carolina Council on the Holocaust, which is an agency of the NC Department of Public Instruction. I have read extensively about Anne Frank, the Holocaust, and World War II.
I also had the opportunity to visit the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. It was a humbling experience that pushed me to learn more about the Holocaust, World War II, and human rights.
This is a sensitive topic. It is important to remember that many people lost their lives and suffered greatly during the Holocaust. It is an important topic to study and to teach. I understand that it is important to be respectful and sensitive when discussing the Holocaust with students.
