課堂經歷
From Naruto to Sailor Moon, we will dive into the historical timeline of anime music and analyze some of the most action packed melodies! Students will participate in creative listening activities, using audio clips to do imaginative listening activities and discover how the music is used to match scenes and characters. I will empower students with basic music vocabulary to describe what they are hearing (fast/slow tempo, rising/falling pitch, instrumentation) and help them understand how the music gives meaning to character development and visual artistry. No prior musical experience is required, but we can always build upon any knowledge you bring to the class!
學習目標
Students will learn basic musical vocabulary to analyze the melodies in anime TV shows/movies. Students will improve their deep listening skills and learn to pick out subtle details in the music that emotionally connect characters and scenes.

We will be listening to music from shows that have the label “TV-14” (Cowboy Bebop is one example), though we will not discuss any of the more adult content in these shows. Just the music!

For this class, I used online articles from various websites (Time Out, Cyber Pop Culture) as well as some scholarly resources from San Francisco State University to study anime music. In addition, I have done extensive scholarly research into film music that helped me create a framework for my materials in this class, specifically into the music of John Williams through online articles ("A Field Guide to the Musical Leitmotifs of Star Wars" by Alex Ross), scholarly research (Professor Frank Lehman) and podcast episodes ("Star Wars Oxygen”). I have used this research to study other pieces of film and TV music from a lens of music theory, helping to find musical connections and motifs that are present throughout.
