課堂經歷
If you have taken my pop-up book class, this is the next step on our creative, ourstory adventure. If you are new, welcome to art with Ms. Sydney! This class is meant to expose learners to the variety of African/Black mythology and oral stories around the world. It is my firm belief that we should know about stories, characters, and archetypes outside of Greek/Roman mythology. In this hands on course, Ms. Sydney begins each class with a discussion question as we wait for learners to get in. Afterwards, we will discuss the story, mythology, or character of the day. Then we will spend the rest of class learning a certain collage technique and building our own collages to represent that day's lesson. No prior collage experience is needed! It is fun, messy, and a great way to get the imagination growing. Learners can put in as much as they want to receive from the class; given that there is a good portion of time dedicated to creating art, learners should be ready to use that time and not worry about finishing quickly. Ms. Sydney likes to put music on while we work, and makes each class highly interactive so that students can feel free to come off of mute at any time. Topics will be updated each upcoming month February Themes Week of 1/26 Heru vs Set Week of 2/2 Vulture stories Week of 2/9 the trickster Ijapa Week of 2/16 Kaang of the San Week of 2/23 Oshun-Yoruba Week of 3/1 amaZulu creation story Join us for a fun collage club!

其他詳情
父母的引導和規範
Students will need to handle glue and scissors each class. Students will need to clean up their mess after each project. Parental advisory is needed. Every story will include traditional accounts of each character, situation, etc, and Ms. Sydney will take care to navigate these topics with sensitivity. Sometimes students do not like spiders or other animals that are mentioned in the mythology so please assure your child that these are stories and no real animals will be used in class. Ms. Sydney uses google slides to present each topic. Students will not need to access the google slides on their own devices.

教師專業知識和證書
I've created curriculum and taught young learners about African mythology and creation stories for the past 3 years. In college, I took Africana studies courses centered around African history, and out of college have taken workshops, professional development courses, and attended Afrikan centered conventions and lecture series. I am a lifelong learner of Afrikan ourstory and culture. I am Black and Mexican and therefore have lived experience being an African descendant and take pride in my ancestry. I will take care to teach about these themes from a historical perspective and will present them as stories to gain lessons from. Just like with Greek/Roman mythology and current super heroes, I will present all of the information as ideas and characters that evolve throughout time and region and will give the historical background for each while keeping the class fun and enjoyable.
