Greetings all! Welcome back to another fantastic year of learning about the Afrikan world. If you took one of the Diaspora classes last year, this is part 2. If you are new, you are in for some hands-on learning and fun! In this 10-week class, scholars will take a deep dive into specific Afrikan concepts, regions, people, and art. I love to use materials that are readily available in the home for all projects. Each class will begin with a short video clip or song and jump into the first group activity of the session. Lectures are often formatted as group discussions and we move through activities quickly to hold learner attention. Each class will also include a major art/science project. Students can view the materials beforehand in this course description and/or in the classroom. Recyclables are our best friend, so save any plastic/cardboard throwaways for the duration of this class. In addition, we will be playing various review games that encourage learners to be creative, recall prior knowledge, and present what they've learned to the group. We are helping learners learn much needed skills for the real world, while having fun. Week 1: Anansi the spider Materials: 2 pieces of paper, colors, string, tape, scissors, glue Week 2: Sekhmet Materials: 2 pieces of paper Week 3: Black Panther Party Materials: ruler, colors, marker, paper, pencil Week 4: Birds, Vultures Materials: toilet paper roll, peanut butter OR syrup/agave/honey, seeds/grains/rice, string Week 5: Queen Amanirenas & Nubian archers Materials: 1 popsicle stick, string/dental floss, toothpick OR cotton swab, scissors, colors Week 6: Brazil & Capoeira Materials: space to move, water, colors, paper Week 7: Asili Materials: soil, seeds of your choosing, compost or paper, small bowl of water Week 8: Why is Afrikan art in museums outside of Afrika? Materials: none (virtual art tours) Week 9: Quilt tradition Materials: fabric, needle, thread, OR fabric, glue, scissors Week 10: Afrikan Marketplace Materials: bring your creation for our virtual marketplace and presentations

Parental consent needed for use of scissors, glue, active movement during our capoeira activity, Kahoot/Blooket, and Google slides. Instruction will include small YouTube clips to introduce topics; parental consent needed for those as well. Projects are meant to engage entire families-parents are welcome to help students with their projects out of class and supplement content as needed. Some of the topics will include discussion about Afrikan resistance to enslavement-topics will be handled with sensitivity and evidence based-discussion. Parents should approve end of semester projects midway through the course so that learner has appropriate materials.

I have taught similar art history and history courses over the past several years for ages 6-16; I understand the importance of presenting small bites of information for students to digest while doing fun activities; some topics will be sensitive and I encourage parents to have continuing discussions with learners about course material and Afrikan ourstory in general. I will be sure to answer questions from a historical and research-based perspective while being compassionate to learner experiences.
