Welcome to African History Second Semester. ( If you have not taken Semester one, scroll down for the link.) In this class, we explore Africa like no other. Africa's history has been told by others through a lens that has not been flattering. This class is different. Our students will experience the true essence of Africa through storytelling, cultures, songs, food, history, and geography told through an African Lens. This is the Africa that you do not see on Mainstream Media or hear about. We will explore Ancient African Kingdoms and Empires. The people who ruled these great empires, trade, political and social hierarchy, and religion. These Empires participated in long-distance trade with others outside of the continent such as Arabia, Oman, Persia, and India, and as far as Tang and Song Dynasties in China, Indonesia, and beyond. You will learn and the rise and decline of each empire and what was happening around the world when the empire was at its zenith. There is a section of Africa through the Ancient, Medieval, and Modern eras. What each millennium brought to the continent. Migration within the continent and the biggest Slave Trades out of the continent that shaped it. North Africa has a unique and fascinating History. Before Arabization and the Introduction of Islam, the Amazigh People flourished in Numidia and Mauritania. They had a rich culture and History that was disrupted by Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, and Seafaring people, and later Arabs and Europeans. The introduction of Camels as a beast of burden and later Islam changed the face of North Africa, West Africa, and even East Africa. Students will learn about Africa before the Scramble and Partitioning from an African perspective. By the end of the first semester, our students will have a better understanding and appreciation of Africa Second Semester 1.
