===================== SCHEDULE ===================== You can request a day and time you like! Just click "Request Another Time." ===================== WHAT WE'LL CREATE ===================== In this ongoing 1-on-1 class with a flexible schedule (click "Request Another Time" to choose your day and time), individual learners combine coding and art to create wondrous designs called "generative art" – art that changes itself each time it's viewed. Learners can create many different projects...
How to create shapes using the commands: ellipse(), rect(), point(), line(), triangle(), and beginShape() How to add color to shapes using the commands: fill(), stroke(), strokeWeight(), noFill(), noStroke() How to fix problems in your code ("debug" and undo) How to randomize the size, color, and position of shapes using the command: random() How numbers represent colors (how to use color models) How numbers represent positions on screen (how to use the coordinate grid) How to respond to screen clicks by using function mousePressed() How to use the built-in variables "mouseX" and "mouseY" to make shapes follow the on-screen pointer How to create variables and change their values to move shapes, change their speed/size/color, keep track of score and state How to slide shapes across the screen by using the command: translate() How to spin the screen by using the command: rotate() How to use the "if" command to make choices that produce different behaviors while animations are running How to use commands that repeat actions ("loops") like for() and while()
15 years of experience teaching JavaScript, Python, Scratch, web development, robotics, and artbotics to learners from 8 - 15 years old in private, public, and after-school settings. Two masters degrees in education – from Harvard Graduate School of Education with a focus on technology and from Lesley University in mathematics education. And, most of all, great love, patience, and respect for the many different ways that people learn and the different gifts they each bring to the classroom!

Learners will create a login and join a coding group at Open Processing, where their class will write code and see the animations. Student logins at Open Processing include many safety features. For example, no personal information is collected, student profiles and projects are visible only to the teacher and classmates, and learners are not allowed to comment or annotate projects outside their class. For a full description of these protections, see "Restricted Student Accounts" at https://intercom.help/openprocessing/en/articles/5228489-student-account-types. This free code editor, funded by the Processing Foundation, works on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chromebook computers but isn't appropriate for iPads or phones.
