This class was inspired by all of my little gifted readers who are ready for rigorous deep questioning and writing to complement texts that they can tackle at such a young age. We will look at short stories that are in-depth in theme and complexity, while also challenging a young, but an advanced reader. This class would be great for a child who can read independently at a higher level but may have a hard time uncovering questions that are not explicitly answered in the text. An example would...
Students will learn how to annotate and think aloud as they listen to peers and formulate their own questions about the text. Students will learn to defend positions about a question that is asked. Students will be about to write a compare and contrast paper after deep dialogue and discussion between short stories. Students will share in respectful dialogue with peers but will learn to ask, probe and give feedback.
After working with some advanced readers that were very young, I realized that my "academic conversations for advanced readers" truly targeted older students and that there was a demand for highly motivated, fluent and fast-paced younger students in this academic area.
