On September 14, 1814, a young lawyer and amateur poet penned the words to the poem that would one day become America’s national anthem. But the circumstances under which the poem was written is a tale of hope and inspiration that deserves retelling! In this class, using a highly interactive mix of story telling, question and answer, video clips, photos, and the song itself, we will discuss the who, what, where, why, when, and how! Students will learn the historical context of the writing of America’s national anthem.
Students will learn an overview of the War of 1812.
Students will learn an overview of the Battle of Baltimore.
Students will learn how a poem became a song, and a song became America’s national anthem.
Students will learn about the particular huge flag that flew over Fort McHenry the night
Francis Scott Key wrote his iconic poem.
And finally students will have an oppTeacher Carol has an MA in American History, and a PhD in Pedagogy, as well as a background of teaching history, government, and economics. Fun fact... as a 6th grader, I memorized all the stanzas of the National Anthem for fun. There are four!
