"Men Wanted: For hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in case of success.” These are the words of Sir Ernest Shackleton when he placed a newspaper ad to solicit men for his 1914 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. The Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914–1917 is considered to be the last major expedition of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Conceived by Sir Ernest Shackleton, the expedition was an attempt to make the first land crossing of the Antarctic continent. What took place on this journey is nothing short of incredible. Teacher Tom is ready to lead you on one of the most exhilarating & comprehensive deep dives into the phenomenal story and exemplary leadership skills made manifest through one of the greatest adventures of all time: The Shackleton Expedition. Tom has been studying the life and leadership skills of his hero, Ernest Shackleton, for over two decades & desires to enrich your history & leadership skills curriculum with his extensive knowledge of this amazing expedition. Antarctica was said to be the last place on earth needing to be explored before outer space, with many comparable conditions. Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth. Conditions in Antarctica are, in fact, the closest place on earth to the surface of Mars, and to the icy moons of Jupiter and Saturn. It is the southernmost continent and site of the South Pole & is a virtually uninhabited, ice-covered landmass. The goal of expedition leader Shackleton, who had twice fallen short of reaching the South Pole, was to establish a base on Antarctica's Weddell Sea coast. Did he suceed or fail? What makes him one of the greatest leaders of his time? This class will have your learner on the edge of their seat, listening intently, to each class as we explore topics such as: Week of Sept 14th: Ernest Shackleton's history & experience, his newspaper ad, and goals for this expedition.
