課堂經歷
In this 4-week course, learners will explore various types of maps and how they impact our daily lives while learning how to use them for navigation. Using maps for navigation purposes is an extremely important skill. However, we also use maps for other things in our daily lives. In this course, learners will not only learn to read and use maps but they will be able to explain why each one is important and how they are used. We will cover the following topics: Week of October 3: The History of Maps/Important Features on Maps Week of October 10: Using a Compass/ Map Projection Week of October 17: Topographic Maps/ Road Maps Week of October 24: Geologic Maps/ Maps and Technology This course will be a mixture of lecture, video, discussion, and hands-on activities. Some activities may require time spent outside of class to complete. We will be using Nearpod to guide our discussions. Learners will be able to view lessons via screen share features rather than having to log into Nearpod. They will also be required to print some items for this class to complete and then upload them into the class forum before the next meeting. All assigned homework should be uploaded by Saturday of the next week so that I have time to look over it before the next class. It is a good idea to have a dedicated folder or notebook for the course to keep materials organized. All information that learners will need for the week's topic will be uploaded on Sunday for their reference during the week. Learners will need to have a working compass by the second week of class. You can usually buy these at a local sporting goods store or one of the big box stores or order them online for a very reasonable price and they are great to have for people who enjoy the outdoors. Other supplies are minimal and include graph paper and colored pencils. That's it! And, learners will be on their way to navigating the world! This is a collaborative course where learners interact through discussion and activities. They will be expected to explain how they arrived at their answers on activities during the course. I hope to see your child in class!

I love all things regarding maps! They are very important tools for geologists and I have used them for many different things from mapping the geologic features and terrain to mapping the locations of various features in real-world work scenarios. I am looking forward to sharing my knowledge and helping young students learn to navigate the world around them with confidence.
