This course is a great opportunity for your 5th grader to get ahead or review their mathematics. Students will have optional assignments provided in order to practice the skills being taught. We will spend class time going over assignments and discussing any difficult problems that need to be reviewed. Week 1Lesson 1Introduction & MultiplicationIn this lesson, we will get to know our classmates, go over class expectations, and begin learning standard algorithm multiplication. Ms. Emily will instruct and then provide practice problems.Lesson 2Long DivisionIn this lesson, we will begin class by reviewing the optional homework from lesson 1. After review, Ms. Emily will instruct long division using the standard algorithm strategy and provide practice problems.Lesson 3Order of OperationsIn this lesson, we will begin class by reviewing the optional homework from lesson 2. After review, Ms. Emily will instruct "PEMDAS" order of operations and provide practice problems.Lesson 4Simplifying Fractions (Greatest Common Factor)In this lesson, we will begin class by reviewing the optional homework from lesson 3. After review, Ms. Emily will instruct how to simply fractions by finding the greatest common factor.Week 2Lesson 5Adding & Subtracting FractionsIn this lesson, we will begin class by reviewing the optional homework from lesson 4. After review, Ms. Emily will instruct how to add and subtract fractions by first finding the least common multiple. Real-world problems will be used for practice.Lesson 6Multiplying & Dividing FractionsIn this lesson, we will begin class by reviewing the optional homework from lesson 5. After review, Ms. Emily will instruct how to multiply and divide fractions. Real-world problems will be used for practice.Lesson 7Adding & Subtracting DecimalsIn this lesson, we will begin class by reviewing the optional homework from lesson 6. After review, Ms. Emily will instruct how to add and subtract decimals. Real-world problems will be used for practice.Lesson 8Multiplying & Dividing DecimalsIn this lesson, we will begin class by reviewing the optional homework from lesson 7. After review, Ms. Emily will instruct how to multiply and divide decimals. Real-world problems will be used for practice.
Lesson 1: Students will learn the standard algorithm multiplication strategy to be able to multiply up to a 3 by 2 digit product. Lesson 2: Students will learn to divide using the standard algorithm strategy to group numbers to find a quotient for up to a 3 by 2 equation. Lesson 3: Students will use parentheses, or brackets in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions with these symbols. Students will be able to solve a 4-step operational problem. Lesson 4: Students will learn to simplify fractions by finding the greatest common factor. Lesson 5: Students will learn how to add and subtract fractions with both like and unlike denominators. Lesson 6: Students will learn how to multiply and divide fractions with both like and unlike denominators. Lesson 7: Students will learn how to add and subtract decimals; related to real-world money problems. Lesson 8: Students will learn how to multiply and divide decimals.
Ms. Emily is a certified elementary school teacher with a masters degree. She has taught 5th grade for 5 years and currently lives in Nebraska with her husband and dog. Ms. Emily loves to teach and wants to help each child feel more confident in their mathematical abilities.
