At the heart of this course are two challenging novels. The grammar instruction and a final essay project will be driven by the novels' content. In addition, students will learn to identify and create original similes, metaphors, examples of imagery, and examples of personification. While both books have won multiple awards, please preview the novels before enrolling in the class. The class teaches fifth grade and sixth grade level skills at an accelerated pace. Students will be emersed in reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary instruction. Students will make significant improvements in each of these areas.

Students in this class will not have homework other than reading from the class novels. Some reading will be done during instructional time, but learners will be expected to read between thirty and fifty pages weekly.1 - 2 每週課外時間

Reading comprehension will be graded through class discussions and writing assignments. Students will be given a rubric for reference when writing their final essay. A final course grade can be given upon request; however, I will provide each family with a summative report of their student's progress.提供的成績
Materials: 1. The Bridge Home by Padma Venkatraman 2. The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley 3. Final Writing Assignment: Learners will write an essay about the author's use of theme and how that applies to our novel The Bridge Home. 4. Colored Pencils 5. 10-20 sheets of plain copy paper 6. Post-It Notes large enough for your child to use for note taking. If handwriting is challenging for your learner, please allow your student to use a highlighter in their books. 7. I will send several handouts over the twelve weeks for students to print.
I believe there to be nothing inappropriate for ten-year-old students in our class novels. One is set in India, the other in the UK during World War II. With this being said, I always encourage parents to preview novels before enrolling their learner.
