As mentioned in the description, this class will required reading outside of class. Your child is responsible for reading after each class in order to be an active participant in the next meeting. Additionally, a class challenge will be given to learners after each class should the child(and/or parent) wish to engage with the text on days we are not meeting.

Are you looking for a way to engage your child in reading to help foster reading skills, interact with others, and have fun while reading?
*Please note, if you do not see a section that works for your schedule, please send me a schedule request message and I'll try my best to create a section that works for us both.

Join in this fun and interactive book club with the book, The Girl Who Drank the Moon. As an experienced teacher and librarian, this is one of my favorite books as it captures the reader with well-developed characters, a touch of magic, and a twist of fantasy! It also won the Newberry Medal and is a widely read and loved book for kids!

The class will meet 2 times each week for 3 weeks and is structured as a book club. We'll begin our first meeting by introducing learners, reading together the first chapters and engaging in class activities and discussions. Activities will incorporate a variety of skills such as predicting, summarizing, and even drawing conclusions. We will also focus on character development throughout the book. I love to utilize different games and activities to help with reading comprehension such as Pictionary, Hangman, and even creative open ended questions to help foster creativity and critical thinking skills. These "hands-on" activities are a way to help your child demonstrate their understanding of the story and work on developing and fostering important social and oral language skills. Additionally, your child will have the opportunity to strengthen their writing skills as part of our book club!

For each remaining class, your child will come with his/her book and have read the assigned chapters. Depending on class size, breakout rooms may be used to allow readers to more fully interact with others. At the end of each class, I'll assign chapters to read before our next meeting. Your child will be responsible for reading those chapters (approximately 65 - 90 pages) outside of class in order to be ready to participate in our next class! See reading schedule below:

Class meeting 1 - read together Chapter 1 and 2
      assigned reading: Chapters 3 - 11

Class meeting 2 - book club Chapters 3 - 11
      assigned reading: Chapters 12 - 20

Class meeting 3 - book club Chapters 12 - 20
     assigned reading: Chapters 21 - 29

Class meeting 4 - book club Chapters 21-29
      assigned reading: Chapters 30 - 39

Class meeting 5- book club Chapters 30 - 39
      assigned reading: Chapters 40 - 48

Class meeting 6 - book club Chapters 40 - 48
             final wrap up

After each class, I will provide a class challenge for learners. This is an optional activity that allows your child to continue his/her engagement with the text. I like to provide this to parents so that they may supplement their child's work should they want or need it. It is strictly an optional activity; however, if your child does complete it, they will be invited to submit it to me via Outschool and I will provide personal feedback on their work. They also will be given the option to share with other learners in the class.

If you are interested in this book club as a private section, please reach out to me. I can set the class as private which means it would be your child and friends/family you'd want to join in. There would be no other outside learners. There is no additional cost and can be a great way to form a learning co-op, neighborhood, or friend group book club!

As an experienced teacher and librarian, I love to cultivate the joy of reading in students! Drawing on my background, including my Master's in Reading and being Nationally Board Certified, I plan my reading lessons to capture your child's interests. My personality is very upbeat and enthusiastic, creating a fun and positive learning environment. I really value the individual strengths of each learner and work to ensure I am able to meet all learners where they are by differentiating my instruction. I also enjoy incorporating various modalities such as visual and kinesthetic, to cater to various learning styles. My hope for your child is that they will love joining in each week as we read this award winning book!
