NOTE: if you have come across this class for the 2024-2025 school year, I have combined grades 1 & 2 for science. The standards are the same for both grades, we will just go deeper. On my class page you will find science sections for grades 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5-6. Ask about sibling discounts! I just loved teaching science to my 1st graders! This course can be taken for the purpose of introducing or for reteaching the 1st grade science concepts. Every 2- to 3-weeks the classes will work on a different theme. (Unless otherwise noted.) The students will interact with the teacher and their peers as they learn, investigate and discuss various science topics. They will engage in hands on activities to further imbed these concepts into their memory. Topic activities will contain educational materials (video clips and books) as well as other mediums that are appropriate for that lesson. **This is a very active class that does require some independence. If your child needs more adaptive assistance, please plan on sitting in on the class. I don't want anyone to miss out just because he/she needs extra in-person help! ————————- TOPICS - for 2024-2025 SEE GRADES 2 (Adv 1) SCIENCE CLASS ———————— NGSS Standards to Be Covered This Year: 1-LS1 Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes -- PLANT & ANIMAL - Life Cycle, Needs + Adaptations (Survival) 1-LS3 Heredity: Inheritance and Variation of Traits -- PLANT & ANIMAL - Traits: Young Are Like Their Parents 1-ESS1 Earth’s Place in the Universe -- SUN, MOON, EARTH, STARS (Orbit, Rotation) -- Patterns in the Sky: Day/Night, Seasons, Months/Year 1-PS4 Waves and their Applications in Technologies for Information Transfer -- Vibrating Materials Make Sound / Sound Makes Vibrations -- Objects Can Be Seen When Illuminated -- Transparent / Translucent / Opaque -- Light & Sound as Communication Scientific Method: 5 Senses & Making Observations ADDITIONAL Topics to be Covered: States of Matter + Experiments Force and Motion / Simple Machine + Experiments ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ SCHEDULE - for 2024-2025 SEE GRADES 2 (Adv 1) SCIENCE CLASS ———————— 2023-2024 School Year Schedule: Week of Sept 3: Introductions & What is Science? / Plant Seeds for Germination Weeks of Sept 10: Scientific Method Observations + Experiments Week of Sept 17: Fruits vs Vegetables Scientific Method Process Week of Sept 24: Plant Life Cycle + Plant Needs Week of Oct. 1: Pollination + Seed Dispersal —- OCT 8-14: Columbus Day & Fall Break Week of Oct 15: What is Needed for Photosynthesis? / Chlorophyll Activity Week of Oct 22: Finish Flower Poster Week of Oct 29: NO CLASS TUES OCT 31 - Halloween & travel YES CLASS THURSDAY NOV 2 - Reward Slushie Week of Nov 5: Soil + Edible Soil Week of Nov 12: Needs of Animals + Animal Classifications Week of Nov 19: Metamorphosis / Butterfly Life Cycle ----- OFF THANKSGIVING WED & THURS Week of Nov 26: Observe Butterfly Project - Larva / Chrysalis Finish Butterfly Page Week of Dec 3: What is a Habitat? 學習需求
I am a licensed special education teacher and welcome all learners. Please note that my class size is between 10-14 learners so my class may not be best if your learner struggles with waiting their turn.
父母的引導和規範
Depending on the independence of your learner, parents may want to be in close proximity in case your child needs assistance with the hands on activity.

Both as a therapist and K-3 teacher, I have helped children for the past 19 years - last school year was my first full year on Outschool and then the 11 years before that, I worked in a school which specialized in high functioning autism (there were "typical" students there as well.) Throughout my experiences as an art therapist and then as a special education teacher, I have seen that children learn best when engaged in hands-on acitivities. They tend to retain information much more effectively when enaged in active learning. Besides learning the science standards, the focus for students in this class will be on actively participating.
