During this camp, students will learn to play the kalimba. In each meeting, we will practice playing, learn a song, and review topics related to instrument care and reading music. Together, we will discuss topics specific to the kalimba, including how to hold the instrument, positioning of and comfort of the thumbs, and practice strategies.

Students will learn a total of four songs over the four class sessions. Songs will be selected from folk and world musical literature that illustrates the focus topic for each week. Examples of songs employed in this class could include titles such as:
 - Lightly Row
 - Down in the Meadow
 - For He's a Jolly Good Fellow
 - Cat Came A-Strummin'
 - Hole in the Bucket
 - Don Gato
  - Hey Ho Nobody Home
 - Follow the Drinking Gourd
 - Chumbara
 - Foggy Dew
 - One Bottle of Pop

All song sheets and support materials will be supplied by the instructor. Songs sheets, reference materials, and charts will be provided through the Outschool classroom in a downloadable and printable format.

Songs have been selected for use with the 17-key kalimba. Kalimbas with 21 or 34 keys will also be able to play these songs. (An 8-key kalimba is not suitable for this class.)

Both hollow and "flat" (non-hollow) kalimbas are suitable for this class.

The class size is small to ensure that all students have ample opportunities to participate actively and interact with the teacher. Learning activities leverage young children's natural inclination to move and channel energy to support successfully playing. Simple games, songs, and chants will be used to help the students learn naturally and enjoyably.
