The purpose of a resume is not to get you a job, but to get you an interview. How can you make sure your resume is targeted and well-designed so that you will get noticed? By role-playing as hiring managers, students will review sample resumes of high school students for a hypothetical summer job. As we review the resumes, we will discuss the purpose of each component and how students can make their own resumes stand out. Common resume mistakes and faux pas will be hidden among the resumes...
Students will be able to identify the components of a resume and their purpose. Students will be able to explain why elements of a sample resume are strong or need improvement. Students will practice identifying ways to improve a resume and to strengthen their descriptions of skills and achievements.
I have served on hiring committees for both part-time student worker positions and full-time faculty and staff positions. I have also reviewed hundreds of resumes submitted with college applications. As a graduate intern with a university's Career Services, I assisted students with resume critiques.
Sample resumes will be provided.
