In this class, students will learn how to build an effective informative essay introduction. A PowerPoint presentation will be used as well as a handout, which is linked to this page for student and parent access. The topics to be covered include the purpose of an introduction, its sections, and how to construct each section. The best way for students to gain confidence in knowing how to write an introduction is to write. Therefore, after discussing the four main sections of an introduction on DAY 1, students will be given a stand-alone writing prompt. The teacher will model how to deconstruct the prompt to determine the main idea. [It is recommended to take the "Writing Camp: Master the Thesis Statement" course as a prerequisite for this course.] Following this step, students will develop an effective thesis statement with the teacher's guidance. In addition, they will receive feedback from their peers before finalizing their statements. The next phase of discussion will be how to form a hook using various hook types. Again, the teacher will model this step followed by the students' responses. DAY 2: Students will complete the remaining two sections of their introductions (the topic sentence and background information). The class will discuss the purpose of the topic sentence and how it is distinguished from the thesis statement. After the students have constructed their own topic sentences, they will complete the background information section following the teacher's model and guidance.
