Students will learn about compound words while looking at various examples, being challenged to put those words together to create the compound, as well as think of some compound words on their own.  We will be discussing the meaning of the individual words and the change in meaning when they come together.  Opposites will also be explored, and students will be given a word and challenged to think of the opposite (and as learning level allows we may discuss other words, synonyms, that can be used.  For example, big and small.  If learners find this easy we will discuss other words for big and small - gigantic and minuscule.)  As we discuss opposites we will also look at things like adjectives and prepositions, (as many of these have opposites), and discuss the meaning of 'synonym' and 'antonym'.  For young leaners these may be big words and ideas to understand so we will explain and review often the concepts.  (For example: adjectives are describing words, words we use to tell someone about an item.)   We will also be looking at homonyms, homophones and homographs, looking at all the different, interesting combinations of our English words.  Again, these are bigger concepts, but our focus will be more on the fun and interesting way we use the words.  (For example: words that are spelt the same and sound the same, but have a different meaning.  In class, we will see how many definitions we can think of for different words.)
As we look at all of these words we will work on meaning, spelling, and use in sentences which will aid in the student's ability to read and to write sentences and stories.
