During the writing segment of each class I will be conferencing with each student to help them to develop their ideas and details for each reason. At the end of the class, student will be presenting their writing and drawings to the class. For this reason, class size will not exceed four students since each student will be provided with one on one time. Day #1: As a class we will read the book, “Red is Best,” by Kathy Stinson. Students will answer the question, “What is the best color?” During the writing portion of class students will respond to the question, “What is the best color?” and provide three reasons for their opinion. When students think of their initial reason, they will write it down a quick note on their brainstorming sheets. Students will be provided with a writing template that will include sentence starters, and transition words to help the flow of their opinion writing. Day #2: As a class we will read the book, “Hey, Little Ant,” by Phillip and Hannah Hoose. Students will answer the question, “Would it be fun to be tiny for a day?” During the writing portion of class students will respond to the questions, “Would it be fun to be tiny for a day?” and provide three reasons for their opinion. When students think of their initial reason, they will write it down a quick note on their brainstorming sheets. Students will be provided with a writing template that will include sentence starters, and transition words to help the flow of their opinion writing. Day #3 As a class we will read the book, “The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog!” by Mo Willems, and students will answer the question, “What is the best snack?” During the writing portion of class students will respond to the questions, “What is the best snack?” and provide three reasons for their opinion. When students think of their initial reason, they will write it down a quick note on their brainstorming sheets. Students will be provided with a writing template that will include sentence starters, and transition words to help the flow of their opinion writing. Day #4 As a class we will read the book, “Knuffle Bunny Too!” by Mo Willems, and students will answer the question, “What is your favorite toy?” During the writing portion of class students will respond to the questions, “What is your favorite toy?” and provide three reasons for their opinion. When students think of their initial reason, they will write it down a quick note on their brainstorming sheets. Students will be provided with a writing template that will include sentence starters, and transition words to help the flow of their opinion writing.

Hello! My name is Melissa Mikkelsen. I have a bachelors degree in Natural Science and Elementary Special Education. I am certified to teach Kindergarten through Sixth Grade and Middle School Science. I have taught for a total of 6 years, currently I teach Kindergarten reading, writing, and math online.
When teaching, I believe in engaging the student by asking a lot of questions. I also try to get to know my students by asking them questions about their personal interests. I find that by establishing this relationship it helps support the learning process.
