주당 2-4시간. Students will read independently every week as a part of this book club. In books that are easier to read, typically 6-8 chapters will be assigned every week, meaning students can follow along with a steady ~1 chapter per day. More challenging books (or just books that happen to have long chapters), we will read at approximately half that pace, 3-4 chapters per week, half a chapter each day.

수업 소개

영어 수준 - 알 수 없음
미국 5학년 - 8학년 학년
In this ongoing book club that meets once a week, learners will have the opportunity to read classic, popular fantasy books! Students will read independently and then we will meet each week to discuss several chapters of the novel. In these discussions, students will have the chance to examine in depth the story's events, characters, themes, exciting moments, and whatever else might have captured their interest! Discussion will be largely student-led, but I will have discussion questions prepared and information about the books and authors we will be reading to keep up the flow of the class.

This is an ongoing class with content that builds, meaning that students can join at any time but will often benefit from having participated in previous lessons. We will do a quick review of the earlier parts any book we are on at the start of every class to help new learners acclimate, but all students are encouraged to independently catch up with their own reading while we are in the middle of a book. Beyond that, I provide all students with a cheat sheet with some basic information about the book whenever we begin a new book as a class - I will also provide this individually to any new student that joins. In the schedule below, I have included a breakdown of what books and which chapters we will be reading each week to keep everyone on the same page!

To be continued...

This is only the beginning of our book club! I have several more potential books for us to go through as time goes on as written out in the book list below, but I have not scheduled them out yet as I would love students to be able to vote on our future books from the list so they can be more involved in the class!

The purpose of this class is of course to have fun by reading and discovering new stories, but also to befriend like-minded students and to learn how to express ideas to others in a respectful, engaging, and constructive way. I am here to guide the discussion, ask questions, provide structure, and ensure everyone feels welcome and respected, but this is a book club and so learners will be encouraged to be very involved in it! The more different thoughts and opinions we share, the more fun the class will be!

We hope you can join us in our adventures soon!

Future Book List
The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
Dragon Rider, The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke
Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle

NOTE: There are two versions of this class. This is intended to be a more introductory class aimed at the middle grade level with somewhat simpler stories and lighter content. If your learner is 13 years of age or older and is interested in reading more advanced fantasy novels that may be more challenging to read or include darker content (still appropriate for teenagers!), please see the alternate version of this class on my profile, Weekly Book Club for Fantasy Fans! (Ages 13-18). There is deliberately some overlap between the two levels of the class as two students of the same age can be of vastly different reading levels. Please check out the book list below or contact me to see which class will be a better fit if your child is in the overlap age range (13-14). There are some books (Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter) that are on both lists!

Fantasy books tend to involve adventure, danger, magic, and scary situations for the characters to encounter and overcome. Many of the books that I have selected for this class are typically categorized as middle grade, meaning they are generally considered appropriate for students of the upper elementary and middle school age range. Fighting and some frightening situations are present in these books, and on occasion contain mild language and mild romantic relationships. Even so, in all the stories selected evil is overcome, leaving them ultimately hopeful and positive.

Hello! My name is Jessica Hom (formerly Madeira) and I am thrilled to be teaching on Outschool!

I teach a variety of classes on Outschool, most of them involving learning through storytelling, whether it be approaching an academic topic like history through the perspective of popular stories like Star Wars, discussing novels or movies in social clubs or book clubs, or just straightforward writing and creative writing classes. I always enjoy a more interdisciplinary approach, integrating things like history, literature, philosophy, and geography into classes. I believe that stories play an integral role in helping young people understand themselves and the world around them - and then how to express that to others!

In terms of credentials, I have a Bachelor’s Degree in History, completed alongside a nearly 100 page thesis in Japanese history and a minor in Japanese language and literature. I also have a Master’s degree in Theology with a concentration in Ethics. Furthermore, I have my CE in Social Studies Education from the State of NJ and have worked in various educational settings over years, both in schools and in other educational institutions like museums with children ranging in age from Pre-K to late high school. I have been teaching on Outschool since 2020 and have loved every minute of it. I have also simply always been a voracious reader and writer myself.

With regards to teaching itself, I believe in a very interactive, discussion-based, socratic style of education where every student has a voice and is given the chance to cooperatively process the information presented to them and express it and apply it in their own unique ways. Facts and figures are of course important, but education can and should incite wonder and inquiry in learners. History and fiction alike are deeply interconnected and ask us to look back, to look forward, and to look inward at our own lives.

As for myself, when I'm not teaching, you'll often find me studying or reading! I'm also a huge fan of film and animation, anime especially. I draw now and again, particularly character art for the fantasy novel I am in the (very) slow process of writing. I'm also happily the mother of a one year old little boy!

I hope to see you in class!
