Patience, Practice and enjoying the Process of creating each paint stroke is the goal of Sumi-e painters! Chinese Brush Painting is a beautiful art form in which painters try to capture the essence of nature while leaving space in their work for the imagination to wander!
Our class will begin by comparing and contrasting examples of traditional Western landscape paintings with traditional Chinese ink paintings and Sumi-e Japanese art. We will learn how all cultures value...5-10 sheets of paper for practice (Printer paper or any other smooth paper is fine.) Black Watercolor Paint (Prang watercolor paint trays work very well. You can use ink if you have it, but it's definitely not necessary.) Round Paint Brush - medium size, with a pointy tip (A variety of sizes can be helpful, but it is not necessary.) Water cup, paper towels or napkins 1-3 sheets of large smooth drawing paper for final paintings (11 x 14 inches or larger is best. NOT watercolor paper - smooth paper is needed.)
