In this ongoing course, we will study 9th-12th grade vocabulary words in all categories including: language arts, math, science, etc. Study 10 words a week! In this vocabulary curriculum course we will cover spelling, definitions, and some creative writing/thinking. In teaching the English language I have found the best way to be successful with learning new words and comprehending them is repetition. In this course we will learn the meanings of words, drill on them, practice spelling, and compete in mini-games. Each class includes some reading out loud and assurance of equal talk time between learners. At the end of each class competition scores will be posted. Learners will receive their class scores and optional homework after each class. If there is extra time we study synonyms, play word games, or I will facilitate class discussions around our new words as topics. ***ESL Welcome! PLEASE NOTE: This is a drop in class. Every class includes new words - it does not build on prior classes. Join us anytime! Here is an example of the words we would study in this class: 1. Baggage 2. Endurance 3. Graffiti 4. Informant 5. Kettle 6. Nurture 7. Puny 8. Traitor 9. Wealthy 10. Smudge Here is a class process example: -Greetings, rules, icebreakers, conversations -Definitions of 10 words -Synonyms/Antonyms study -Dismissal We do not have topics for each class as words are chosen at random. But we follow the aforementioned process each week as routine and a sense of expectation provides comfort in a classroom. Why is having a good vocabulary important? 1. Understanding a vast vocabulary improves one's ability to understand and comprehend what they are reading. 2. It aides in the ability to communicate clearly, express oneself, write well and follow directions. 3. When communication may be hard or challenging for someone, having a strong informed word base makes it a lot easier. 4. Increases the ability to write effectively and successfully. 5. Communication skills in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding are a major part of job success for every person. My education includes high school, trade school (nurse aide), personal training certification (self study/tested out), I then attended college and completed both my bachelor (B.S. in Religious Psychology) and masters degree (Public Health, minor in Promotion). I hope to continue my education. I aspire to use my education and experience to educate your darling children.
Experience…
I have been teaching online (various platforms) since 2018 and I have been teaching in person since high school - from pre-k to 12th grade to adults and adults with intellectual disabilities. I absolutely love the opportunity to educate and inspire my students to WANT to learn.
In the classroom...
I value kindness in the classroom, I am gentle, I think participation from all learners is incredibly important, and learning a variety of ways makes an experience invaluable (verbal, hands on, and any other way we can!). I hope to be engaging and fun but also offer knowledge that inspires 'seeking' and dreaming, like I have found in my life.
Fun fact...
Something fun and personal about me: I have travelled and lived all over the United States as well as the Dominican Republic and Guatemala. I was born in Hawaii and have experienced HOT weather of over 100 degrees (help!) as well as COLD (brrrrr!) below 0 degrees. I have also had many many different kinds of pets including exotic ones! It has been so fun. Ask me about them sometime. (=
