In today's world our learners are bombarded with information from all sorts of media outlets. In this introductory lesson, learners will gain the perspective to recognize types of media, purposes behind the media and source validity. Students will participate in discussions with other learners, as well as the teacher, in an open, safe forum. Ideas are encouraged, questions will be raised and solutions will be presented. This class will introduce P.I.E. and the A.C.T. method to follow in...
In this course media literacy will be introduced. Learners will pose questions about media surrounding them, such as, 'Why did they say this?' or 'Who is this message for?' In conjunction, the multiple types of media that surrounds each of us will be identified. Learners will also be introduced to methods of recognizing the 'purpose' of media, with the focus on P.I.E. *Persuade, Inform, Entertain* By employing active thinking, this class will show headlines in the news; students will identify which part of P.I.E. the headlines are under, and then students will learn to A.C.T. - a method to follow in their search for finding truth in what they are hearing, reading or viewing. Critical thinking, confidence to question and the need to dig deeper to find answers are all life skills, as well as necessary in our current media stance. *Please see 'Parental Guidance' section
Although I have been teaching for many years, and many different subjects, grade levels, etc., I have been very bothered by our current world and the fact that there is even a concept of 'fake news'. I think it is owed to learners to give them a structure to follow that will help them determine their actions and reactions to the news they hear. No matter the age of the learner, insight is always necessary.
Students should have a pencil and paper ready for class.

As an educator, I highly value Outschool’s potential that allows me to teach a diverse population; students with differing beliefs, cultures, backgrounds, experiences and ideas. It is because of this that I have structured this class to the methods and critical thinking components we strive to give our children to understand information around us. I will not be examining and debating if current events are fact or fiction; for that treads on a very thin line that may inadvertently offend a student or make them feel unsafe. There is uncertainty in every media outlet report we encounter, and what I hope to accomplish for your student is that they feel comfortable being a critical thinker, questioning something that confuses them, and feeling confident enough to want to dig deeper.
Hello Outschool Families! I am excited to be teaching on the Outschool platform, as I have 20+ years of experience in the homeschool community. I have structured, managed and taught in homeschools with large and small groups, taught in homes...
