COURSE DESCRIPTION: I visit colleges regularly. It's my job! And there are so many hidden gems, good bargains, and stand-out programs that fly under the radar, especially when the institution is not located near where you live. College is your chance to expand your horizons -- and the first step is learning about what is out there as far as education options. For example: Did you know there are... ...relatively unknown universities that have hands-on pre-med programs with significantly...

Students will learn about a large variety of colleges throughout the USA, and occasionally, colleges abroad offering degrees taught in English.
I visit multiple colleges each year. I hold an Independent Education Consultant certificate from University of California Irvine, and I regularly take classes, attend info sessions, and participate in professional conferences to improve my skills in helping students evaluate and select colleges. As an independent college counselor, I visit college campuses (both in-person and virtually) to learn as much as possible about each school. I am an Associate Member of IECA, the professional organization for independent education consultants, and I have also completed their one-week intense Summer Training Institute. I have been assisting students specifically with applying to and starting college since 2014. I hold a B.A. in Sociology (minors in Spanish and English) and M.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language, and I have worked as an advisor at a university for over five years (among other positions). I've worked with students making education transitions (from a foreign high school to an American high school, from high school to college, and from college in home country to college in foreign country) since 2010 both through my professional career and through volunteering at two non-profit organizations in two states.

This class will expose students to many different colleges, which will include public and private (religious and non-religious) institutions. As many private schools often have a religious affiliation or background, this may be pointed out when discussing a private school in a purely informational manner. Any colleges or universities that are discussed in class are for informational and educational purposes only. A college's inclusion in the class does not constitute any endorsement by the teacher. Each student is responsible in determining if a college is ultimately a good fit for them. There are many ways to 'do college,' and all ways are valid. Majors (and college extracurricular activities) can vary widely, and some of these may not appeal to some students or parents, whether for religious reasons, individual viewpoints, or personal experiences. The goal in showing students the majors and/or activities available at a college is to inform students of the options out there. By taking this class, parents acknowledge that students may be exposed to some majors, extracurricular activities, and/or colleges they would not want their student participating in.
The link to each week's college's website will be shared in the classroom after each class as well as a link to the college's page on the National Center for Education Statistics' College Navigator Profile for those students who would like to further research the institution.
MY SCHEDULE: My 'weekend' is usually Tuesday - Wednesday, but can vary based on my college visit/travel schedule. I typically am available only afternoons and evenings. Therefore I may not respond to messages received beginning Monday evening...
