In my class, I will first introduce myself and share why I love signing and how I learned sign language. I will give students the opportunity to share one reason why they want to learn sign language and one sign that they already know (if they know any). Students will learn what sign language is and how American Sign Language started in the United States. Students will also learn basic signs such as their alphabet, numbers, sentences, animals, etc. Students will also be able to introduce themselves by saying "Hello, my name is...." and fingerspelling their name.
I have been signing now for 13 years. I was first introduced to sign language as a college student in 2009. I had a deaf roommate and immediately fell in love with the "world of signing!" I was told that the best way to learn a language is to fully immerse oneself in that language. So, I attended deaf camps, classes, events, conferences and made many deaf friends. Signing was my entire focus and I would practice signing with my deaf friends every single day. It is truly my passion! The best time to learn any language is when you are young. You all are at the perfect age to learn this language. I hope that this class will inspire and motivate you to pursue your passion for sign language!
An asl alphabet handout will be provided for students to print out before or after class. They may use this as we go over our letters in class.
