This class begins by looking at what the U.S. Constitution says about who can vote. Our journey through history begins at a time when (for the most part) only certain white, Protestant men who owned (enough) property were allowed to cast a ballot in the U.S. We will watch as the rules around who can go inside the voting booth gradually expand and how the fight for the right to vote is carried out. The learning goals of this class are that learners understand the history of U.S. suffrage, arguments for and against expanding suffrage, the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, what citizenship is, and the laws around voting in their states. Learners will also practice writing, researching and public speaking skills.
I am currently a graduate student in American History at Pace University. I have a Bachelors of Arts degree in political science and English with a journalism emphasis. I was a newspaper reporter and editor for many years before directing a nonprofit center focused on social justice.
