During the course, students will read, discuss, and analyze The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Ponyboy is your average teenager living in Oklahoma in 1965 - he loves movies, reading, and his gang, the greasers. Students will be required to purchase the novel for the class (or to access it through the library or Kindle/Online version). Remember that this course is focused on discussion and analysis through annotations. As a result, students will be asked to annotate as they read. Attached is the link to the Common Sense Media review of the novel. It covers all things that come up in the novel: racist language, violence, death, drinking, and drugs, and more! If you have any questions, please let me know!
- We will discuss these topics in class by discussing their inappropriateness of their use and language both within the context of the novel and class and outside of class as well. Students are encouraged to ask questions so that our open discussion will allow for us to deepen our understanding of the topics within the novel.
