This is a fun biology class that looks at the beautiful and bizarre creatures that live in tropical, coral reefs all around the world! This is part 1 of a multipart class and classes can be taken into any order! Thes reefs are full of beautiful and colorful life that live in and around these coral cities of the tropics. In this class, we will discuss a variety of marine life such as sharks, other fish, squids, octopus, crabs, jellyfish, starfish, corals, and other sea life with a focus on the bizarre, beautiful, colorful, and cool. This is a beginner class for younger students, however it should be suitable for just about everyone! We will interact using slides, discussion, video clips, and lectures. Coral reefs are some of the most amazing and wonderful places on our planet. The reef teems with diverse and beautiful life of all shapes and colors. Nearly a quarter of all marine life depends on coral reefs, and some of these havens have been around for over 25 million years! Coral reefs and the creatures that live there are beautiful, but some also have some bizarre adaptations! Some of the coral reef topics we will discuss in addition to the beautiful creatures of the reef are: Colors and pigments Hidden languages of animals Predator and prey relationships Climate change Evolution Teeth shapes Habitats and Adaptations The reefs that will be focused on are: the Coral Triangle, the Great Barrier Reef, the Belize Barrier Reef, and Palancar Reef. We will only be focusing on animals that are residents of these tropical coral reefs and not migratory species.

Students will learn about tropical coral reefs, what it takes to live in that environment, and the adaptations that help those creatures live in this bustling ocean city. Students will also learn about how animals use color to communicate, predator and prey relationships, how coral reefs are formed, and what could happen to them in the future.

Hi! My name is MacKenzie Piacenti, but I generally go by Kenzie. I teach a variety of science classes, mainly Biology and animal facts. I also teach Sociology, English Literature, and college advice classes. I graduated Susquehanna University in 2023 with a dual degree in English Literature and Sociology, University Honors, and Summa Cum Laude. I am also a soon-to-be PhD student (in August!), studying Sociology at Howard University. My teaching experience includes being a Teaching Assistant at Susquehanna University for three courses, having taught at Peak Academy for Community Learning for three years, and I have previously been staff at an environmental science camp in Pennsylvania, USA called Conservation Camp. I follow the camp of teaching that follows Harvard psychologist Howard Gardener's theory of multiple intelligences, essentially stating that everyone has a unique learning style and a unique intelligence, and if you engage the students in what interests them they will be more receptive to your teaching. I always try to have my classes be student lead so they can learn while being engaged!
