Paul Gauguin was a famous French artist who liked to use unusual colors in his paintings of everyday things, people and nature. Students in this class will learn about the artist, critique some of his famous works and discuss the use of colors in impressionist works of art. After a short presentation and video, we next experiment with colors by mixing our own colors and painting a simple landscape. -Tempera paints in bright colors (red, yellow, blue, white and black at the very minimum). -Paintbrushes (assorted sizes). -Large sheet of drawing or watercolor paper. -Wide masking tape (optional, will help keep the paper in place and leaves a white frame around the painting when done). Prepare your paper in advance by taping the paper to your work table prior to class.
