In this ongoing class, each week we will learn a new set of blends (2 consonant sounds that blend together), consonant digraphs (2 consonants that make a new sound), or long vowel sounds. These are skills typically taught in the second semester of Kindergarten. On day one, we will practice making the sounds in isolation, blending with them into words, and then play a game with our new words. On day two, we will practice with additional blending, complete a word sort, play a game, and read a book. The materials used in the class will require some adult assistance to prepare before class. In addition, students will be given materials to practice the sounds at home. This class is for beginning readers who know their consonant and short vowel sounds and have started blending to read words. Parents should be nearby to help with any technology issues but do not necessarily need to sit with their child. Of course, parents are welcome to sit off camera with their learner if they wish or their child needs additional support.
