In this class, students will learn skills to create independence in music making on instruments that use keyboards such as electronic keyboards and acoustic or electric pianos. Skills include reading, listening, thinking, and creating music, and are all contextualized within experiences of music literature from diverse cultures and world regions. Sandra Girouard began teaching private and group keyboard classes over thirty years ago. Her experiences in leading students to develop personal musicianship through these classes led to her involvement in educational technology and graduate studies in about the musical development of children and young people.
- Each student should have ready access to a piano or an electronic musical keyboard. The camera/device should be placed in such a manner as to allow the teacher visual of both the student and both hands. - In the case of an electronic musical keyboard, there should also be a way for the student to show the teacher the button features. A parent may assist younger students with this, when and if needed. An alternative would be to provide the instructor with the make and model of the instrument so that she can try to find an image or map of the instrument's specific features. - Students will need Piano Adventures theory, performance, and lesson books. People contact the instructor for information about which level books to purchase. All class materials and resources will be provided through the Outschool classroom. This includes the embedding of resource videos that will be hosted on YouTube. Parents should always supervise students when they are using the internet in any situation.
Weekly resource videos (song accompaniments or examples) are hosted on YouTube and embedded in the classroom. All other digital materials (downloads) are produced by the instructor utilizing open-source materials.
