수업 소개

Let's have some fun exploring how planes fly.

In this four week class, learners will focus on modifying one paper airplane design to gain insight about the forces of flight. We will build and fly planes in class and share our findings. During the process, learners will practice scientific thinking and procedures built upon throughout the class, such as experimental design, making observations and data gathering and communicating your experiment and results.

Day 1: Dunt-Da-Da-Da! The Dart Plane
In Class: Learners will build dart airplanes and put them through a series of tests to find the optimal conditions to maximize the plane's flight performance for time aloft and distance.

Day 2: May the Forces (of Flight) Be With You
In Class: We will be learning about the four forces that affect flight and working on our testing skills. Learners will investigate the affects of weight by clipping items onto their planes and observing the results.

Day 3: Lift Off!
In Class: In this class, we will investigate how plane size and construction material affect the flight of the paper plane. We will test planes of different sizes and planes made with different material. Students will further their understanding of experimental design.

Day 4: What a Drag...
In Class: Learners will continue to advance their experimental design skills by performing a series of tests and trials to look at the affect of drag on their planes.
학습 목표
Students will learn the nature of science through building, testing and modifying a basic paper airplane design.
These include creativity, trial and error, success through failure, investigation and experimentation, data collection and communicating results via words, videos and images. While doing this, students will study and apply four principles of flight: drag, lift, thrust and gravity.

Students will work through the following steps of the engineering design process throughout the course:
Ask: Identify the Need & Constraints
Research the Problem
Imagine: Develop Possible Solutions
Plan: Select a Promising Solution
Create: Build a Prototype
Test and Evaluate Prototype
Improve: Redesign as Needed

These exercises will allow students to work at all six levels of Bloom's Taxonomy:
Remembering
Understanding
Applying
Analyzing
Evaluating
Creating

그 외 세부 사항

학부모 가이드
During class, students will be asked to test out and fly their planes. Please assist your students in finding the best set up to do so that allows for flying space of about 15 feet. Students may step away from their computer/device to fly their planes, with a timer, and then return to their computer/device and the class after the allotted time.
수업 자료
Students will need access to the following common household and school items throughout the class. I will post the materials needed for that week's class 1-2 days prior.

• A notebook or journal (for each class and for the homework)
• pen/pencil
• 3 colored pencils or markers
• Printer/notebook or loose leaf paper (at least 5 sheets per class)
• Various thicknesses of paper/material
• Timing device (portable)
• Calculator
• Scissors
• Ruler/measuring tape/yard or meter stick
(you may also print a guide, make a paper or string one)
• Tape/string/yarn/twine
• Paper clips or other clip ons like barrettes, bobby pins, etc. (a few)
• Other household items for modifying their paper airplane (as their creativity demands)

Danielle has always been interested in engineering (designing, building and testing). Her Master's of Science Education K-8 program included engineering education as one of the core topics. She brought the knowledge and practices learned to her own classes. Paper airplanes are a fun and readily available means to repeat the engineering process many times, in a short amount of time, while learning a great amount of the science (concepts and thinking/processes) involved. Danielle has vast experience designing and facilitating inquiry based activities for students of all ages, as well as modifying an activity to make it a great fit for a specific age range. This class has been designed for the learner to have time to take on a building challenge, followed by talking about it with peers to gain new insight, and then repeating the process. This is a great combination for successful learning.
