수업 소개

Discover the exciting world of science fiction through short stories in this supportive and engaging class. Designed for teens working at lower grade levels, I provide extra guidance and support to help build confidence and skills while exploring imaginative and thought-provoking tales.

Introduce your learners to the captivating and unsettling worlds of modern science fiction as they explore classic short stories from Ray Bradbury, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., and Isaac Asimov.

This class is perfect for teens who:
🌈Want to improve their reading comprehension skills
🌈Prefer a relaxed, interactive learning environment with little pressure
🌈Find longer and dense texts overwhelming or challenging

This class is best suited to teens who lack confidence with analyzing, comprehending and writing.

📎This class will not be canceled for low-enrollment. I teach all classes, even if only 1 learner is enrolled. If your learner does not like to go ahead with 1-to-1 classes, please let me know.📎

We will read the following short stories:

"Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut is a dystopian short story set in a future society where the government enforces absolute equality by issuing state-enforced handicaps to individuals who possess any physical, intellectual, or artistic advantages.

"The Veldt" by Ray Bradbury is a short story set in a futuristic home where technology plays a central role in everyday life. The story explores themes of technology’s impact on family dynamics, the dangers of overindulgence, and the loss of control over modern inventions.

"Marionettes, Inc." by Ray Bradbury is a short story that explores themes of identity, freedom, and human relationships through the lens of futuristic technology. The story examines the desire to escape reality and the risks of relying too heavily on technology to solve personal problems, ultimately raising questions about the nature of humanity and control.

"Robot Dreams" by Isaac Asimov is a short story that explores themes of artificial intelligence, morality, and the complexities of human-robot interactions. The story centers around a robot named Elvex, who has been programmed to perform household tasks, but unexpectedly develops the ability to dream.

All four stories explore dystopian themes, which often include government control, rebellion, or the consequences of technological advancements. These themes can sometimes be distressing or thought-provoking, especially for students sensitive to darker or more negative portrayals of society. Several of the stories deal with complex philosophical or ethical dilemmas related to freedom, identity, control, and technology. These ideas may challenge students' existing beliefs or lead to difficult questions. While not excessively graphic, there are violent moments in some of the stories. These stories, while accessible to older students, are primarily written for adults, as they explore complex themes such as government control, identity, the consequences of technology, and philosophical questions about autonomy and morality.
