수업 소개

Join us for a fun, thought provoking, and engaging book club where we meet every two weeks to discuss award winning books of varying genres about contemporary societal issues. I believe that using books to discuss contemporary societal issues allows for hard but necessary conversations to take place. Students will learn what it means to explore issues through the lens of social justice. Exploring books through a social justice lens requires students to apply critical thinking in authentic scenarios and make connections to real-world challenges.I will lead a round-table discussion for each book we read and every student in the class will have an opportunity to share their opinion with their peers. Students in the class will be asked to think about what they read, form an opinion on what they read, and then share that opinion with others. I will foster an environment in which differing opinions are valued and students feel comfortable sharing their ideas.

***Please look up the books prior to enrolling your student to make sure the choices will be a good match for your student and your family. These books address sensitive issues and may contain content and language that some families find inappropriate. I encourage you to read reviews of the books before enrolling. These books are all Young Adult books most appropriate for grades 8 and up.***

교사 전문성 및 자격증
In addition to my 20+ years of experience as a secondary English teacher, I have a BA in Sociology and have taught Sociology courses at the community college level. I have a passion for bringing diversity of literature and content into my classes and highlighting marginalized groups and have done so through the exploration of authentic texts with open and honest discussion that encourages students to apply critical thinking to real-world problems, reflect on and challenge their own beliefs and biases, and learn how to respectfully discuss sensitive topics. In my English 12 class (high school seniors), which I have taught for seven years, we have two units devoted to the exploration of texts related to Social Justice and Gender Roles. In addition, I have participated in the Equity Training provided by my school system, completed professional development related to choosing diverse texts and how to teach sensitive topics, and lead a Cultural Diversity and Heritage Club for students.
